Even if fewer people do say “Mizzuruh”, I think it is a more genteel, stylish pronunciation. I certainly don’t think the folks who say Mizzuruh are hicks and bumpkins as some of the posters appear to believe.

Seriously? Mispronouncing a state name is genteel?

Is it okay with you if I hold the opinion that “Mizzuruh” has a more genteel sound than the other, non-Missourian pronunciation?
Besides, if the spelling was changed to Mizzuruh then those who pronounce it that way would not be mispronouncing.

I think it is Mizzouree. I also think it is Illinoise.
I will not disparage those who say Missouruh or Ill-annoy.
All you liberals on city-data love diversity. Why not let people pronounce state names the way they want?
I like to say Cali-foreign-ya, too. Please respect my choice to say that in this diverse culture.

Cultures may be diverse, however, misspelling and/or mispronouncing any word lacks adherence to proper English. Just because some 'like' to say words their own way, this does not make it correct nor does it make it acceptable.
Missouri is and always will be Missouri.....Missouri |məˈzoŏrē

Ahhhh—Illinoise. You raise a good point. I say as long as we’re going to fix the spelling of Mizzuruh, we should also tackle the problem pronunciation next door, Ilinoy.

Ha...I was born and raised in St. Louis along with many other family members, and believe it or not, not one of us has ever said 'warsh' nor 'farty-four'. Now that I live in a rural area I have heard these pronunciations a few times. Maybe it's a form of 'slang'. Good try!!!lol...
