Being born and raised in the St. Louis area myself, I've gotta doggedly stick with məˈzoŏrē as well.

Really? That surprises me. All of the St. Louis people I know pronounce it that way. It doesn't bother me. I don't rag on people for the way they speak. How they act is more important to me.

My family never pronounces that way, either, nor do I, for that matter, so who knows?

All the St. Louisans I went to college with said "farty-far" and "farrest" for forest. Maybe the St. Louisans who deny these pronunciations just don't realize that's what they say because that's the way they grew up saying it and that's the way their families said it.
I can usually pick out St. Louisans who move to Rolla by listening to them talk for a bit. I can also usually tell the St. Louisans when I hear them talking at the gas station/convenience store. Of course, THEY don't have an accent. Only we hillbillies do.

Hardly. Perhaps its a matter of what part of STL one grew up in, I dont know what part of the Lou Northwoods is from, I lived in Ladue.
On the other hand, some of my mamas people from Poplar Bluff say "warsh", and so forth, perhaps it may be 2nd generation transplants from the southern regions of Mo.
Anyway, they still dont say Missouruh.

Hi Lady, my paternal family came from Kentucky and Tennessee, while my maternal family came from Germany and settled in Iowa prior to moving to St. Louis. My parents settled in the Central West End. I used to love to drive through Ladue and T & C and admire the beautiful estates.
