Default Has anyone gone mushroom hunting yet?

Its been a little on the chilly side here especially during the evenings, but there has been enough moisture and I'm hoping to try later this week after we get a few more days of warmer temps....

Has anyone gone out and looked yet?

I live in Northern MO so I may be a week behind Southern MO. I've had the best luck in lower lying areas....

I did hear today that some people have found the smaller grey ones. I think those are the first to appear if I'm not mistaken...

I've been out. I know several folks who have found mushrooms over the past week or two. I personally didn't find any, but I don't like them, I just go out for fun and very possibly don't notice them.

I've only eaten them cooked, so can't comment about raw. I find that a simple recipe for morels works quite well. Slice the mushrooms in half (cutting from bottom to top). Rinse and dry them. Dip the slices in an egg wash and then roll in flour that's seasoned with salt and pepper. You can then fry the mushrooms in oil or cook them in a skillet until golden brown.

That's how we fix them too. My husband sauteed a few in butter without any breading and they were pretty good.

They need to be soaked overnight w/ a little salt in the water to make sure you get any bugs out. I also rinse them four or five times to get rid of any sand or dirt. I can't stand grit in my mushrooms!

Crazy talk. Bugs just add flavor and texture to the dish!
