Default Moving to Shannon Co, question about trash

Howdy, I'm moving from Western Montana to Shannon County late this summer. I'll be living 6 or 7 miles from Winona and was curious what people do about trash disposal out there. I couldn't find a county dump in the yellow pages but there seem to be lots of private trash services. I'd rather just haul my trash myself though...
Thanks!

First off, welcome to Missouri. Shannon County is an absolutely beautiful place.

Many people in the Ozarks use "burn barrels"...old 55 gallon metal drums with the tops cut off, and small holes in the side for water to drain. Trash is placed in the barrel and burned. If you have no reservations about the environmental effects of burning trash, this option is the easiest.

Probably the best option for you would be to haul your trash to the recycling and sanitation center in Mountain View, MO. It is about a 20 mile drive from Winona on US 60, and they accept household plastics and cans for free. You have to pay them to take trash, either by the bag or by the dumpster. The center is run by the City of Mountain View but they will take your trash regardless of if you are a resident of Mountain View or not. I can't find the phone number or address online, but it is just south of the junction of US 60 and MO 17 in Mountain View. I'm sure if you contacted the city hall in Mountain View they would give you all the info you needed. You may be able to pay the City of Winona to take your trash also (with you dropping it off), but I'm not sure. I know for a fact that Mountain View will take it.

Small-scale county dumps have been closed across most of the United States since 1993 due to environmental legislation from the federal government. The closest municipal landfill is in Hartville, MO (probably 2 hours from Winona). This is where Mountain View will haul your trash to.

Wow, that was a fast response! Thanks for the info. I live just a few miles away from a dump here in Butte, MT and I guess I wasn't really aware that dumps have become a rare breed in many parts of the states.
Sounds like a combination of burning and recycling will work for me, thanks again!
