Default Marshall, MO

We are looking into Marshall MO now since my husband can just transfer down there for his job. I was wanting to know what the schools were like, rentals, and if there is any part of the town I shouldn't live in with two young girls. Any information on Marshall would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have never lived in Marshall, but I lived in Sedalia, which is about a 30-45 minute drive south of there. I worked for a place where I would deliver paychecks to a company in Marshall 4 times a month. To be honest, I didn't check out the entire town, just my route that I took, and it has been about 3 years, but I remember it to be a bit bland, with railroad tracks running through the middle of town, and the part I remember was a bit run down. Not a lot of work that I remember, and I've heard that (at least at the time) they were having a problem with meth.

I personally don't care for anywhere near I-70. Sedalia was a bit farther south of the interstate, and I loved it there. The people were absolutely fantastic, at the time, housing was cheap (we had a two bedroom duplex with cable for 250 a month, not fancy but not a dump) and that's where they have the state fair, and a racetrack for stock cars. Keep in mind, it has been a while so maybe someone still there can help you out better. My apologies if things have changed, but that's how I remember it. Hope this helps!

I do not live in Marshall but my husbands family does so we go there often. It is a nice town that has grown some in the past few years. I think that the west part of town seems to be the newer subdivisions. The housing market there is moving a lot and there are quite a few houses on the market. I am a new real estate agent and will be listing one there next month (after an auction) which will be a 1,950 square ft. home for $99,500. That is about the norm for the area. I am not sure about rentals but would be happy to check it out for you. I would be happy to email you some listings so you can see what is available if you would like.
There is a super Walmart but I am not familiar with the other shopping options as I don't usually go there to shop. I do know there are some really good places to go there to eat. Marshall is the County seat for Saline County so they have a county courthouse surrounded by shops in a town square. We don't ever go there so not sure what is there any more.
The major employer there is Con-Agra and there is also a college. The schools seem to be pretty good (I had severall neices and nephews who went to school there). Not sure about the entertainment options other than a movie theatre as we don't usually do that there either.
If you have any other questions I would be happy to answer.

Carolyn

Nice rental property in good condition is difficult to find in Marshall. However, there are plenty of nice houses up for sale at reasonable prices.

I don't have kids in school, so I can't give you first-hand information about them. In general I don't hear people complain about the schools. There is a big park, complete with swimming pool and a new skateboard park that the kids all like.

In the summer the municipal band plays free concerts on the courthouse lawn. There is a small but good library, a hospital, curbside recycling of paper each week, and a movie theatre. Marshall has a Super Wal-Mart, but no Target. There is a Stage (women's clothing) store. Restaurants include a Mexican restaurant, three Chinese, and a recently opened Italian restaurant. There is also an Applebee's and the usual fast food places.

The town square is not what it used to be. It now has a drugstore, a sports clothing store, several antiques stores, a Chinese restaurant, an ice cream and sandwich shop, a thrift store, etc. I hear that it used to be a bustling hub of activity with plenty of stores. Maybe it will come back.

As someone else said, the major new building activiting is west of Highway 65 bypass.

I don't know how far Marshall is from Springfield, but I can tell you how far it is from Kansas City.

Marshall is about 80 miles east of Kansas City, using Interstate 70. From Interstate 70, you go ten miles north on Highway 65, and there you are.

Sedalia is 20 miles south of I-70 on Highway 65, and Marshall is 10 miles north.
