Default Jefferson City?

I'd like to go see Jefferson City and if my current location doesn't work out I was considering the area. Is there any areas to avoid there where the crime is higher or neighborhood not great? Any better areas? How does everyone like it there? I'd like a working class neighborhood that I can go work out in the yard and feel safe. How is this city for that? How about the fair? I was looking at some photo's of last years and I want to go now!

Jefferson City is a great place with about 40,000 population but it feels smaller sometimes. Even though the economy is in the dumps, state government is the major employer so that tends to keep things pretty steady. It is about to become a two-Walmart town with a new one opening on the east side. Lincoln University is the local college. There is some growing interest in neighborhood revitalization in the older parts of town. The old prison has closed and the land is undergoing a planned redevelopment...slow but ambitious. A new federal courthouse is under construction. Some people would say the area around the university is the bad part of town but it isn't any worse than any other university neighborhood. Cole County Fair is in late July and is a typical small rural county fair. The state fair is in Sedalia, about an hour or so west on highway 50. Hope this helps.

I've driven through Jeff City a zillion times and usually stop and eat. I think it is a very cool town for a state capital. It's too bad more state seats aren't more like it.

Default I Like Jefferson City

Take it from someone who has lived in Jefferson City, St. Louis and has travelled and spent months in Europe and now live in Florida.
Jefferson City is an older, established river town that has been accustomed to decades of immigrant people arriving by river steamboat, rail, and built commerce and diversity early with German, Irish, Italian, African roots, among others. (One of the oldest black universities in the nation, Lincoln University was established in the 1800's, is located there) Columbia College has a campus there, if you are interested. The city has a legacy of long traditions, like youth oriented sports programs, an active local little theatre, large parks with top notch facilities and a balance of public and private schools that provide many choices for residents. One of the largest Catholic high schools in the state, Helias, has long attracted students from distant towns, including Columbia. Downtown Jefferson Cityscape is dominated by the state capitol building and numerous high and mid-rise buildings, shops and entertainment built on conservative careful planning. Yes, JC is smaller and sleepier than Columbia, but JC also is connected by interstate-quality roadway to beautiful Lake Ozark, where many Jefferson City residents own second homes and enjoy watersports. There are so many more qualities about Jefferson City, but if you cannot make up your mind, In this economy there are probably many more homes foreclosures in Columbia and you could get some great deals there, but it wouldnt be JC.

Jeff City is O.K. -- I grew up there and it's nothing like some of the more rough hoods in St. Louis. The older part of town is on East High -- east of MO Capitol bldg. Some of that was damaged in the tragic 500-year flood of 1993 when the MO River swelled over downtown. So if you rent on eastside Jeff -- look before you leap, check for flood damage and mold. Eastside is OK, but can have it's drama. No ghetto's in Jeff -- that's a capitol city and very clean. Southside / westside is nice, too. I like Jeff, but I like St. Louis more 'cos it's urban and Jeff "City" is a cute charming town that tries to be a city.

living in old munichburg is historical MO, but I like the closeness of the city. We have no big airports, but a small one in columbia. It is much quieter than columbia, and less crime. columbia has had talk of "gangs", and it was once a quiet little college town. JC has capital police and crime is less. All towns have drug problems. I do feel safe in my yard, even in town.
