I agree. Sadder still is that it is quite widespread, in many/most rural areas...

Default New candidate for sheriff, here's the scoop

Chief deputy faces charges for assaulting inmates
Washington County sheriff says Wilson was fired in March
By TERESA RESSEL\Daily Journal Staff Writer
Dec 29, 2006 - 20:05:52 CST

POTOSI - The former chief deputy for the Washington County Sheriff's Department is facing charges for allegedly assaulting two inmates.

Former Chief Deputy and Major, Vernon G. Wilson, 53, of Potosi, has been charged with two counts of second-degree assault. The charges were filed by the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney's Office on Dec. 22.

Each charge carries a sentence of up to seven years in prison or a fine of up to $5,000.

Sheriff Kevin Schroeder said Wilson was terminated on March 1 and had been placed on administrative leave 30 days prior to that.

He said early in the year, an internal investigation began into department policy violations.

He said during the investigation which began for those alleged policy violations and after Wilson was terminated, a lot of information came forward from the jail, and a criminal investigation began.

Prosecuting Attorney John Rupp said the sheriff requested his office's investigator to act as an internal investigator in the case.

According to a probable cause statement signed by Investigator Donald Cooksey, on Aug. 14, 2005, Wilson assaulted an inmate by punching, slapping, and slamming the man's head into the concrete jail cell wall. It states the inmate lost consciousness and received numerous bruises, a swollen eye, face, and cheek and a severely lacerated lip.

The probable cause statement also alleges Wilson assaulted another inmate in November of 2005 by choking, slapping, punching and then slamming the inmate into the concrete wall of his cell.

Schroeder said he had no idea inmates were being mistreated. He said what he is hearing now is that everyone employed in the jail at the time was very much afraid of Wilson and “due to that fear, they wouldn't say anything.” He said the employees were afraid of Wilson, and what he would do or could do to them.

Schroeder said he hired Wilson when he took over in January 2005. Wilson had previously worked for other departments including Jefferson County.

Rupp said others were also investigated. He said no other charges have been filed but the investigation is still ongoing. Schroeder said he is not concerned that his other employees were involved.

The FBI also conducted an investigation into allegations of violation of civil rights. Rupp and Schroeder said they do not know the conclusion of that investigation but believe a report has been submitted to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

He's also been married 5 times.

He use his power for personal gains.

Warn the voters who this man reeally is!

My family and I are supposed to look at a couple of houses in Potosi. What I have read worries me a little. If meth is such a problem, does that mean there are lots of thieves and associated crimes?

Look at the local/regional news media to get feel for what they have: Daily Journal Online - Park Hills, MO

For some reason, the local Potosi on-line newspaper seems out of commission at the moment: http://www.theij.com/ (broken link)

Here is the city's web site: City of Potosi, Missouri : Information Resources for Potosi Residents and Visitors.
May sound strange, but you can call the city and/or county police/sherriff for info too.
I've done such in the past when moving into unknown areas [before I discovered CDF too]

My brother bought property 30 yrs. ago in Potosi. He was in the service and just recently retired from the military. We used to go 3-4 times a yr. to check on the property for him and dearly enjoyed the countryside. We were not able to go to the property in the last 2 yrs, but I finally made it. In 2 years, the area around & my brother's property has become a dump site. Not only is there meth being produced, but moonshine and mariuana are the next ranked commodities. I do mean land fill type dump site. I thought I took the wrong road (had no tresspassing signs), so I went to city hall. They were kind enough to give me a copy of an ariel map of the area. They had his property plotted wrong. (There were certain markers that distiguished his property- powerlines running through) When I brought this to their attention the reply was "OH-H, I don't doubt that!". A city official informed there are no zoning regulations, when asked about the dumping. When told of state laws and Epa regulation on dumping he kind of laughed and then dimissed me. With a survey, real estate attorney and documentation from 2 previous owners, we are preparing to go to court just to get them to plot the land correctly.

jay-j, that is terrible. If you don't mind would be good to keep up to date, as interested in what transpires with this, as such is not right at all. Curious - was the city/county using the property as an authorized landfill, or just the cretins doing such? Best to yas, and hope that can get that resolved in a positive manner. The meth sadly doesn't surprise me, nor the weed that much, but the 'shine hadn't heard of much being produced there.

Indeed there is a maximum security prison in potosi.
And most of the people who live in Potosi are working in the prison system.

But other then that it's a nice little town with nice people.
Been there quite a lot in the past. and always stayed in St Charles Missouri.
Now that's a little town that steals your heart all together........ the history of the town is amazing. It's like traveling back in to time.
