But OB, you forgot the missing-teeth grins and the fact that you were voted in as the Grand Marshal.
Can't wait to come visit!

Not native to the area, I moved my family to the Ozarks from Georgia in late 1953 and have been here since. My wife moved here from Texas. We both gripe about Yankees (and St. Louisans)--a lot.

I have a reputation at this point as a big mouth, I am sure, but let me throw some thoughts in.
Like you, I LOVE the pacific northwest. However, you cannot eat scenery. I notice that no one in your family is willing to throw some cash into the pot and help you out,i.e. another apartment, another town, etc. You can and probably do love your family-but it is YOUR life. If you want to start over-do it! You are in your 50's-so what? Some people at 50 get married, adopt 3 kids, and start over. Some people sign up for the resthome. Only you know your heart. Go back to school if medical transcribing doesn't pay well anymore. I trained as a paralegal, now I wish that I had trained as a court reporter. They are in demand 24/7. My degree is worse than useless, so sometimes that isn't the answer either. Find a new niche and love the moment. I had to laugh when people were talking about the weather changes in Missouri. Like the pacific northwest is Laguna Beach. I am sure that you have seen your share of wild weather. Until someone has lived in that not safe, not maintained apartment, and been alone doing it, they cannot relate. Visit areas of interest, and take detailed notes. Have a realtor show you around. Make a 2 sided list of what is important and what you could care less about. It sounds silly, but it helps straighten things out. You will be surprised how different you are once the financial and mental pressure is off. Being in a happy (to you) neighborhood, that you can afford, with a little spending money will make the world a joy. Good luck and keep us posted. I wish you much happiness. Blessings!!

LOL, actually, that would be MY title, but welcome to the forum! The poor mods have to spank me about once a week .
However, I have to agree with all your observations, well put, and well said.

here here! I can't believe my eyes. Hopefully the OP has already made her decision....
if not....I'm 32 (not sure what a lone woman would do on her own! shudder!!) and have moved several times to different places. It can be done. (lol).
To guilt this woman into staying near her family is absurd. It's her decision. Until you have lived in unsuitable housing and limits put on you because you are *shudder* a "lone woman" then you really can't talk.
She wants to better her life. And her daughter probably needs to grow up too.
$400 is not a lot anywhere. But its nothing in some places. I hope she makes the best choice for herself.
I'd take lonliness over roaches any day. A 50 year old woman that has born children deserves a suitable living space to call her own! It's about time...

Would I insult someone and then suggest they move to my own town? I don't fill my posts with little smilies; maybe I need to do that kind of girly thing to make the little girls feel better. (Now that was condescending! )

actually, it was consescending, insulting, arrogant, and lacking in understanding of her personal situation.

Funny that you plugged a Klaus Nomi vid (that doesn't play as a vid) many years ago before he died, he was a friend of an old girl friend from High School. He was a New Yorker (via Berlin) and not from the Bay Area. I actually hung out with him a few times. He was a pastry chef in real life and actually a nice guy when you got pass the weirdness ( most of the time he was always "in character").
