From what I've seen, Doniphan is a cute little town. The courthouse interesting, and it has a few little shops and businesses with old brick buildings.

I couldn't tell you about living there, though.

It is a small town. It would take some getting used to probably.

It will help a lot if you are Pentecostal. You know, no jewelry, no makeup, REALLY, REALLY BIG HAIR. Lots of them around Doniphan, as I recall.

I'm Pentecostal and we don't practice any of that stuff.

I don't wear makeup much, but that's just because I'm lazy.

What's the matter, 20yrs? Your posts lately seem to be more snide, bitter, sarcastic. I hope things get better for you.

Agree 100%.

Doniphan is a really, really isolated small town. It is probably 2 hours from the nearest interstate, and the same distance from a major airport. Even coming from a town of 28,000 it will be a huge culture shock. Sure, Doniphan is a very cute and scenic town, but I'd think long and hard about moving there, and be sure to visit it first and really spend some time there.

No snowboarding either. There is one ski area in Missouri near St. Louis (maybe 3 hours from Doniphan?) where you could board at, but it is crappy man-made snow. Basically slopes covered in ice. Us Missourians fly out to Colorado or Utah if we want to go skiing/boarding...it is something you are going to have to give up besides once or twice a year if you move here...and it will be even harder in Doniphan because it is so far from an airport.

Look into SW Missouri or maybe the Lake of the Ozarks area if you want to move here. Much closer to the lakes (again, Doniphan is a bit of a drive from a lake) and more other transplants...culture shock would be nowhere near as bad. Closer to the airports too if you want to go boarding.

who needs a lake when the Ozark National Scenic Riverway is your backyard?. I have friends that have a house on the river in Doniphan, really gorgeous, I didnt see any holy hair-pilers anytime I have been there.

Ah, there you see? The curse of the message board. You interpret this comment as snide, bitter and sarcastic, when nothing could be further from the truth.

I love Pentecostal people! First of all, they do not put on pretenses. They love and accept people for who they are *not* what they look like. And they are probably the most non-judgmental religion I have found. They will NOT try to convert you and they will not push their religion down your throat. I'll take a thousand Pentecostals over 50 Baptists any day! LOL

I'm just trying to give the OP a realistic assessment of the area. Doniphan was a little more backward than I care for, and I've been to Blue Eye! LOL (inside joke).

ETA: PS. You're very sweet to give me good wishes though, and I appreciate it.

Doniphan sounds very nice indeed! In 2003 I got to visit Grand Gulf State Park near the town of Thayer, due west of Doniphan and also very close to the Arkansas border. Little story: I had stayed the night before in West Plains and headed over to Grand Gulf around 7 in the morning to go hiking. When I got back to my car around 9 am I saw a park ranger, and thought to myself, Oh no, I'm going to be in trouble for getting here too early. Not to worry--she couldn't have been more courteous or polite, and assured me I wasn't in any kind of trouble for entering the park on my early morning hike!

Grand Gulf is dubbed by some as a "Little Grand Canyon," which might be somewhat generous in description, but this collapsed cave has left some fascinating rock formations and a big staircase leading down into the gulf! See Grand Gulf State Park - Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites, MoDNR. I wonder if KSHE has ever visited this place!

Note: The staircase didn't come into existence as a direct result of the cave collapsing--it took a number of good, hard workers to build it! Just thought I'd clarify that...

You bet I have! I spent a lot of time in the area in the early '80's, and have visited often since then. The whole area is quite lovely. I am planning on floating the Current while I am home, but am doing it during the week, to avoid the crazies!
