Neighborliness
In small towns, neighbors usually watch out for one another's places and if something APPEARS out of the ordinary, they'll call the law. I think that if what only appears to be out of the ordinary, turns out to be just the ordinary, we small-towners would just say, "Well, I'm glad it wasn't what it looked like, but you never know."
I can't imagine my neighbors getting upset like that professor up in Boston. If a similar circumstance happened in Rolla, I think (and I hope) folks would say to the police, "Well, no big deal. I just had a little trouble getting the door open, but thanks for responding so quickly, and I'll go thank the neighbor for keeping an eye open."
And I really can't imagine anything like this happening to someone who took the time to get involved and call the police to what APPEARED to be a crime. No wonder folks in the cities don't want to get involved.
I hope you metropolitan folks fleeing to small towns and the country don't bring that professor's attitude with you.

OB, in a small town one would know ones neighbors, that was not the case here, so you cannot even draw any kind of parallel.

Having never lived in a city, I guess I don't understand how neighbors treat neighbors there. I guess the proper behavior in that world is to look the other way if you see something that looks unusual. I believe that's what I would do if I were forced to move to a city--especially now, in light of current events.
That leads me to wonder if black criminals are thinking about targeting upscale black homes in the cities now, figuring that even if they were seen, the neighbors would be afraid to call the cops for fear of being labeled racist. Nah, probably not smart enough. I don't mean that they're not smart enough because they're black, but because they are criminals.
I'm just glad I live in good ole Rolla, MO.

It depends on the city and neighborhood. I knew most of my neighbors in Austin quite well, and we often chatted and made a point to look out for each other, as the neighborhood bordered some rather sketchy areas. When I lived in suburban DC I never once chatted with my neighbors, and the most interaction we had was occasionally saying hello. Then again, the DC area is among the coldest and least friendly places to live in the entire USA.

Had the police came up to me after I broke into my own house, I would have thanked them for looking out for my stuff....and would have gladly showed them my ID, and pictures of my family hanging on the wall.....To cuss out the cop was a ghetto move by a Harvard Proffessor..........and Obama should have stayed out of it.........
