I tried real hard to prove OB had something to do with this - but I can't.

10 worst states for retirement

Missouri ranked 9th of the worst 10

Reason for low rank: Except for a low cost of living, Missouri doesn't stand out in any category, but a relatively high crime rate and a relatively low life expectancy make it a somewhat unwelcoming environment for retirees.

Who (or what) is OB?

And why would retirees care about the unemployment rate?

Hmmmmm........Missouri is ranked 32nd in crime on this list.

Reason for low rank: Except for a low cost of living, Missouri doesn't stand out in any category, but a relatively high crime rate and a relatively low life expectancy make it a somewhat unwelcoming environment for retirees.

In this table, it shows Missouri ranked 38th for life expectancy.

So how so we rate in the top 10 worst places for retirees again?

Interesting article but I'd think Missouri to be a decent retirement option. I think the more active could move here and enjoy a better life expectancy. There does seem to be a larger amount of overweight and obese people than I had seen in any other state I lived in and maybe that contributes to a lower life expectancy than some states may see but I'm sure each state has it's factors.

The living expenses are much lower than I was paying when you look at gasoline, electricity, water, and trash. I pay about the same for food and TV. Housing can be much lower in more rural areas but is comparable in the larger cities. Vet services are cheaper where I am also. My house taxes aren't anything to complain about but I have a 100 yr old modest house.

As far as crime, I've seen some in the couple of years I've lived here off and on. Property crime mostly.

PS Yeah I'm suprised OB wasn't all over that article posting in the California forum

Really not credible.

Life expectancy in Missouri is only two years less than the United States as a whole (USA, by the way, is 34th ((ranking 50)) in the world in life expectancy*1).

Unemployment figures shouldn't factor into retirement decisions.

Increased leisure time and moderate climate allows retirees to "grow their own", further decreasing cost of living. From the discussion boards I frequent, that was a major factor in many retirees choosing Missouri.

Quite honestly, with all the annual budget and debt problems that Illinois' state government has, I'm very surprised it(Illinois) didn't place in the worst 10 states to retire. Missouri, if you ask me, probably has to be one of the better states one could retire to, due to a low tax burden. And since I'm quite more of a libertarian myself, I know I'd probably more than likely fall in love with that state if I could only explore it more.

I dream about Missouri, from all the things I've read about that state. Interesting list, though I'm not sure if I agree with how the author(s) ranked the worst 10 for this....

Some of the report is just silly.

Climate, taxes, and crime are more important to retirees than unemployment or life-expectancy. A healthy, fit nonsmoker from a family of long-lived people is not going to chop any years off by moving to a state with a lower life expectancy. An overweight, unhealthy smoker from a family of short-lived people is not going to add any years by moving to a state with high life expectancy.
