Modern Ozarks cultural activities
One of our cultural activities in small Ozarks towns is to keep up with our local high school athletic teams.
If you're a transplant accustomed to operas and ballets, this will hurt you, but you ought to consider going to some home football games this fall. Some of you have asked about fittin' in with the locals; one good way is to show your neighbors you support the home football team.
In other words, show your new neighbors that you are interested in the kids of the community. Go to school plays and concerts, too, as well as art exhibitions. Buy some fruit from the FFA at Christmas time. Go to the band's chili supper.
In my little world tonight, my two former home towns got pounded, Republic by Nixa and Aurora by Rogersville, but Rolla pounded Willard, so I feel a little better.
The Missouri S & T Miners open Sept. 3 at Central Missouri and then play at home Sept. 12 against St. Joseph's. The Miners are favored to win the Great Lakes Football Conference this season.
You slickers are probably cringing at my calling this a cultural activity; I suggest you redefine the term, change your way of thinking and join in the fun.
P.S. I forgot to add "smilies" and can't now. I have discovered that if I add those silly little girly things, not quite so many people get mad at me.

Missouri and Small town america is not unique.
People all over the country embrace their local HS teams. Texas, Western Pennsylvania and Southern California are notorious as rabid HS Football fans. People all over the country take pride in the accomplishments of their local stars. One of St. Louis most prominent sport casters has a baseball park in his honor in my/his home town of Hyde Park, NY. (we also take credit for FDR)
The difference is in certain areas of the country , the "locals" also support high culture in addition to producing national and state sports champions. and Embrace the equally

Not everone knows how to weave themselves into the tapestry of a small community.
Ozarksboy offered a good suggestion on how to begin.
Dinsdale, dont go there, we all know you hate Missouri, so please stop.
BTW, all, I am pleased to announce that I am the proud owner of 20 acres in Sainte Genevieve County, aint it great???????

In the NYC area that would be live, aka: "legitimate" theater, orchestras, the symphony, ballet, museums, operas, the visual arts, etc. They're supported by ticket sales, direct donations, bequests, benefits, etc.
Having been brought up by New Yorkers and having lived close to Los Angeles for many years, I've had enough of it and look forward to the simplicity and purity of local, "home grown" cultural and sports offerings.

it certainly isn't jack lighting deer on the backroads
Don't get me wrong, I like stupid fun has much as the next person.
Buts it also good to have quality ballets, operas, symphonies and other arts nearby and available. Definitely support your local high school and amateur productions. But fi you ever get a chance take in a good show or art museum.
Sorry, but Branson doesn't count has high culture (and neither does Disneyland/DisneyWorld)

The St. Louis Symphony ROCKS!! What I, ahem, meant to say is that the St. Louis Symphony is one of the top symphony orchestras in the country. The Art Museum in Forest Park is also outstanding.....and I might add, completely free of charge!

Only problem with this is that St. Louis is outside of the Ozarks. The Ozarks don't cover much of St. Louis County at all, only the far southern and southwestern portions, and certainly not any of St. Louis City proper.
