I can say I have never crossed a board quite like this one in city-data where assumptions, stereotyping and flat out rudeness is the norm. Congrats to the welcome wagon for making someone feel unwelcome just because of where they were born and raised.

Bhaze, think of the reverse side of the coin. Consider what's happened to states like WA, OR, AZ and NV, certain parts of NM, Ashville, NC and other "notable" locations when hit by an influx of Californians. Cultural shifts have occurred and property prices have increased significantly while wages have not, making it difficult for true natives to afford homes. Why? Because people from CA before the melt-down sold their over-priced McMansions at great profit and purchased elsewhere with cash, driving up local prices until they were out of the reach of many locals.
Those of us in rural Missouri, and we can only recently count ourselves among "those," are intent upon preserving what we've found here and don't want to see our home towns and areas turned into strip-malls a la California sprawl. In my mind, this is something to be cherished and people who truly want to leave the left coast behind should be glad about our protectiveness. It will help preserve the reasons we left and settled here. If you're of a same mind then I say, "Welcome!"

My perception is that MOST of the people on this board are great, even tho' we have varying opinions...there are a few rude, negative posters who tend to stand out but should not be your focus.
I've tried to make a point in other posts that one or two bad apples can indeed ruin a fun and wonderful barrel...it's happened here before.
If only they could be banned permanently, instead of just getting a hand slap.

But alas, there's that whole free speech thingy.

A lot of grey area regarding free speech issues on a privately owned forum. That gives the moderators a huge free hand in editing and deleting posts.
And is it really worth the time, effort and money to contest a free speech issues on some goofy privately funded forum in the first place?
If you don't like what someone posts - It is still your choice whether to ignore or engage.

I actually think there needs to be a negative forum poster or two. Granted some members come across as rude sometimes, maybe even most times, but there should be balance on the board. Heck LJ you said you weren't happy with your first home in Missouri. If a place is completley closed off toward outsiders folks have the right to know. We all know of many a person who moved to Missouri, were miserable and moved back to wherever they came from.....
Anyone hear from Da Jammer lately?

There. Fixed. Sounds suspiciously like what happened to Native Americans, doesn't it?
Personally, speaking with my own opinion, I find this whole topic ludicrous, insulting and offensive. And stupid. Y'all are all grown ups, I presume. But some of y'all sound like the Cripes and Bloods. Turf wars. Stay out. You're not one of "us". "Stay where you are. Go somewhere else. You're not welcome".
Contrary to what you think, all Californians don't have McMansions. We work our asses off, need two incomes just to put food on the table and pay rent. Most of us don't own our own homes and have to rent. And many of us have to rent out rooms just to make that rent. To lump everyone from California in to one lump is assinine and the mindset no different than those who said "the only good indian is a dead indian".
Even in LA, I can't see one person...gangbanger or regular joe blow, telling someone on the street or met in a burger king "you're from (insert state name here) " to "get out. We don't like people from that state". Not once in all my 57 years have I ever heard ANY californian be so closeminded. Then again, maybe it is because of how I was raised. Oh. Wait. I was raised by a father who was born in Strawberry Arkansas and a mother who was born in Edina Missouri. Gosh. What a coinkydink.
I'm coming to Branson in November for a visit. Bullies and morons will not keep me from going or moving where I please, when I please. And I will bring my attitude with me because the man that raised me told me to always be kind and polite but never be a doormat. Some of you have tried to make me a doormat. This old lady bites back when pissed off. At the moment...that's how I feel. Tomorrow I will be Miss SunShine from the Sunshine State.
To those who have pm'd me (quite a few, actually) and extended a welcome..thank you. The others who showed they were raised under a rock....kiss my hiney.

Oh my......
I cant speak for anyone except myself, but if that is what you think of us natives, then perhaps you you really should look elsewhere.
Missourians are, almost a fault, proud of our heritage, dont really care for out of staters to insult us, are quick to take care of our own, and dont really care what folks from out of state think of us.
We take care of our own, take care of our neighbors, take care of our state, and contrary to some opinions, we are highly educated, those that arent, still have enough sense to know what poseurs are.
Now...... are you sure you STILL want to live amongst us? You might not care to hear what we natives think of you, and how you may be treated if you vocalize what you stated, that nonsense I did NOT repost.
But, as I said, I can only speak for myself, I find it interesting that you lurked for over a year before unleashing all the invective on the natives, if you dont like it, then dont come here.
BTW, we bite back.....HARD! We are used to bitter old ladies, one more is not going to make much of a difference, unless they insist with boring us to tears with how it was done back in Cali, enough already!!!!!

We used to make a lot of California jokes in school. One reason being that the typical way we view Californians is that they are crazy liberal, spoiled, and want everything to be their way. Is that true? I'm sure for most it's not. But I'm sure Californians think we are backward, ill-educated, and inbred. Is that true either? No. Everybody makes generalizations of other people. If you move here, pretty much keep to yourself, and treat people with respect, you probably won't have a lot of issues, other than an occasional "crazy liberal" joke. If you come in here and tell us that we're uneducated and ignorant and that all of our ways are wrong, you won't be welcomed as much. That's just the way it works.
I think a few of the pushy Californians have tainted our view of Californians in general. We tend to be more cautious with people when we think that they think that they are more evolved than we are.
If you move here and start protesting stuff and complaining about our conservative views, then, although you have free speech, you will not be well-liked. Most of us Missourians are just fine with the way our lives are. We don't need you to tell us how to fix it. My family has been here since the Civil War. I don't need people telling me to drive a certain kind of car, or to do whatever to make my life "better."
We Missourians have taken care of ourselves long enough. We don't need your input.
Those grumpy old ladies have probably spent their whole lives doing what they know. And they're probably only grumpy because people keep pestering them to change.
