Help me identify my ideal Missouri town
My husband passed away a bit over a month ago after a very short battle with cancer. For lots of reasons, I do not want to stay in the house I'm in (too much land for me to keep up, too far from a job, etc.), so I am trying to think of where I might want to move. I won't do anything within 6 months, but probably next summer.
I love a small town, where I can walk or ride my bike most places. I would love to be in a town with a distinct town center (like a town square), with shops and home-owned places. I know Hermann would be a nice place, but want to consider all options before I make a choice. I want to stay either in the southeast part of the state or fairly close to St. Louis.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sainte Genevieve......you can walk from one end of the town to the other in half an hour, distinct town square, historic, beautiful, very little corporate presence . Its an hour south of STL.

I’ve always thought Cape Girardeau was a fine looking little city. Big enough to have most of your basic needs, yet still a small town atmosphere. It is close enough to St. Louis to make the occassional day trip. Plus it’s a river town with many scenic views of the Mighty Mississippi.
Very sorry to hear about your loss. A fresh start may be just what you need.

Hermann was my first thought even before I noticed you included it.

Have you considered Hannibal? One gets the additional benefits from Quincy, IL just across the river too. Ok, so it is NE, but still not so very far from St. Louis.
Condolences to you. I think you are wise not to rush your move too quickly. Best of luck to you moving forward.

happymomma58.....I also add my condolences on your loss and agree about staying put for awhile. No drastic changes as of yet. Take it slow. Enjoy the research and added knowledge that you will benefit from. There are many towns and small cities that would qualify. City-Data does have a rather thorough statistical description of many locations.
St. Louis County is well known for the numerous suburbs surrounding the city of St. Louis. Many of these would satisfy your quest. Areas such Kirkwood, Webster Groves, and even further away you'll find Washington and Union. Smaller communities include Gerald, New Haven, Owensville, and St. James. I wish you the very best in your search and again, take your time.
