New Madrid, Dunklin, and Pemiscot counties in Southeast Missouri are great places for someone who is looking to retire. Lots of land at reasonable prices and the area is completely charming. But then... I grew up in New Madrid county in Portageville, so I'm a tad bit biased.

Yes, Texas County sure does have some spectacular scenery. The rugged hills and cliffs and the Mark Twain National Forest is also nearby. I had no idea that prices were still so low in that area. It may not be the best place for a younger person to find a job, but is definitely a great place to retire!

Going into the opposite direction somewhat, the Gasconade & Franklin County areas offer some positives that might be worth considering. Homes/land are relatively inexpensive, within 1-2 hours of St Louis and its 'burbs, w/ the attractions that they offer. Land has some nice hills, altho' not as rugged as further south of course, yet some scenic rivers [Bourbeuse , Gasconade, Meramec, etc.] flow through the area, with good road & school systems.

disclaimer: trying to not show potential bias regarding this area, as was raised herein...

Thank you........ jobs are kind of hard to come by, this is a perfect place since hubby is disabled and I stay home to take care of him. I am trying to talk my parents into retiring down there with us. My dad is sold, he went down with us when we closed on the house, my mom's first time coming down will be when we move down in 3 weeks. I know she will be sold. It is beautiful. Thank you for being so nice all of you. I am going to try to post some pics of our new home just to show what you get for your money down there in that area. People that are not from there are shocked. You all have a great day.
God Bless,
Jim and Kim

Paola, KS is also just 20 minutes away from Kansas City. It would be a nice city in which to retire. You can always come to Kansas City for a bigger city feel.

The website is: www cityofpaola dot com.

Thanks,
Ronda Marchant

I think SW MO is best near Springfield, affordable housing and close to good medical facilites and only about 3 hrs from KC. Cost of living is good and the Springfield is not to big but not that small with many benefits.
