Hey, you two! I just thought I'd mention that I think bias is exactly what this person and so many others are looking for at this site! So, please don't feel bad about showing bias...instead, go for it! Inquiring minds want to know!

Hi, I'm a new member. I wanted to ask about MO, KY and IN. If you had a choice which state would you choose? We are from the Northeast and looking to relocate. We like suburban areas with great things to do for kids, inexpensive housing, and also friendly people. Has anyone lived in these states and could give us a general opinion/comparison. Thanks.

Agreed. Somewhere like Hermann or New Haven seem to be a nice match. Two nice and peaceful little river towns in Missouri's Rhineland region. While not being extremely close to KC (3 hours), it is nice for Columbia (1 hr), and St. Louis (1.5). Hermann seems to have an inordinate amount of restaurants and attractions for a town its size.

For a bit more to do Washington would be okay, but it seems to be on the edge of St. Louis' westward sprawl, and probably isn't the "rural feel" that you're looking for.

Can I suggest you look into DeKalb or Rushville? Both very nice rural towns (by each other) Only about one hour from KCI airport, but yet its definitly country living! Grew up there and I love it my parents own acreage there and they wouldn't trade it for the world.

I have a modest home, update appliances, new carpet, refurnished bathroom, lovely yard, outbuildings, large garage, and 40 acres just east of Ava, about 20 or 30 minutes. I'd be happy to send some pictures of the place to let you know what it looks like. The setting is wonderful, it's on a long winding country (but paved!) road, and the only neighbors out there are mainly cattle farmers, either dairy or beef. Everyone has large pieces of land, and you can be friends with the whole area, or stick completely to yourself, its up to you. 20 minutes from Mountain Grove which has nice restaurants, WalMart Supercenter, all the regular amenities of a relatively small town (it's about 5000 people or so). I'm going to sell it eventually, because I'm moving back up to northern Illinois to be near family and more jobs. I'd like to rent it (pretty well furnished because I'm not taking anything out of there if someone wants to rent it, or conversely I CAN take stuff out if you have your own) if I can't sell it right away. If you think you might be interested, I can send you some pics of the place. It's in an area called Vanzant. - M.

They love old homes and would have no problems fixing one up, although they aren't looking for a huge project to contend with. Are there any towns/counties you would recommend? My husband and I are relocating to the Kansas City area so in our opinion, the closer to KC, the better. However these relatives want to be in a rural setting, so it definitely needs to be at least 1-2 hours from the city. But any recommendations are welcome.
Well, lets see. Eldorado Springs is 2 hours away south of KC. (about 45 minutes from Springfield) Its a small town, mostly older people. everyone is very friendly, close knit, and look out for each other. (its very "mayberry) There are alot of nice homes with what your relatives maybe looking for. Haggans Real Estate, Nevada, MO is an excellent site to go onto to check out homes around the area. Appleton City is also a little closer and is even better! Now, Butler is very close. Adrian and Archie are VERY small, but very close too with houses mainly with land. Anywhere in MO really, that has a small population, is going to have houses for under 200k with land. I would look around St. Clair County, Henry County, Cedar County, and Vernon County! *when i say small town....I mean REALLY small, like less than 5,000 people Hope this helps!
