I don't know if your relatives have already made the move...but I'd just like to mention, Lamar, MO. It is in Barton County...about 100 miles south of KC (right on 71 hwy). It is a small town of 4,000. There are rural homes in that area too. Lots of country side and close to Stockton Lake (about 45 minutes). We camp there quite often and see many retirees there also. The nice thing about the location of Lamar to KC...is hwy 71 is on the southern end of KC and it is a straight shot (70 mph). I know of some people that are selling their home (3bdrm, 2 bath). They have done a lot of remodeling (was an older home). I believe it is selling for $96,500. I have been in the home many times, it is a nice place and yet you still feel comfortable (homey). If interested...just drop me a message and I'll give you more details. I used to live in Lamar, and I will honestly say...I really liked it. Not a hussle and bussle town but it has the necessities. The main attraction is a fairly new (small) Super Wal-Mart Store.

3.5 hours from Kansas City, Dittmer, MO, nice homes with acres, country settings, 1/2 hour from St. Louis Mo., country but close to city. We have seen some very nice properties in that area.

I recently discovered El Dorado Springs, and wow, it is adorable. I love the town square and old-fashioned theater.

Being a pessimist, I don't think so. Just the facts. So many people move here with the wrong impression and end up leaving. It is not family oriented, it is not a nice place, unless your retired with money and keep to yourselves! And you cannot make a living here. Walmart fixed that!

Being that you already described yourself as a pessimest, I suppose you already sealed your fate, and cannot open your eyes to the wonders that Mo has to offer, what a shame.

I love Cabool, but prefer my own little town of Norwood, Missouri. The school is great, the people are friendly, there are only a few scattered stop signs and it is beautiful. We moved here from Illinois and would never go back. If you don't mind car pooling, Springfield is not that far. I used to drive that far in Illinois. You have Mountain Grove, Cabool to the East and we plan our trips to town because of the gas prices, if you have daughters you can shop at Lyndy's in Norwood for fashions, great Churches beautiful scenery and wonderful people. Of course you'll find that most any place in Missouri. The only thing hard to find is People from Missouri seems most of us are imports!!!!

They love old homes and would have no problems fixing one up, although they aren't looking for a huge project to contend with. Are there any towns/counties you would recommend? My husband and I are relocating to the Kansas City area so in our opinion, the closer to KC, the better. However these relatives want to be in a rural setting, so it definitely needs to be at least 1-2 hours from the city. But any recommendations are welcome.
Harrisonville is good

Default Mo

Webb City is a good town, but probably too close to Joplin??? We grew up in Cassville. It's a few hours away from KC, maybe too far. However, we loved it there and even have considered moving back if my husbands job would allow it. Very small, a couple thousand people. About an hour away from Joplin and Springfield. Good working class people. Very friendly.

We live in a bigger city now (not large, just bigger). I miss the manners and friendliness of that little town. When we visit, I just can't get over how polite and friendly people were
