I found Joplin a nice city, with nice people. I experienced a thunder and lighting storm that made me sit up and take notice. It's been many years since I've seen that kind of thunder and lighting. I'm sure there are probably more intense storms I will incounter. It was however exciting.
I was really surprised that they still have smoking and nonsmoking section's. Another interesting thing was there were no "don't drink and drive signs," no "buckle up signs," and "do not litter signs," on the freeways. Perhaps it's because the folks in Missouri don't need to be told what to do, unlike the people in the Northern and Eastern parts of the United States.
I was a bit surprised at the religiousness of the area. Not that it's a bad thing, but it still surprised me. I guess the midwest is still considered the bible belt. Perhaps church is considered more a social community issue, than the hell and damnation I was raised in. Frankly, I never could buy into that whole control of the church. No offense to anyone please...It's just that I've been there and it wasn't a place I was fond of. But once again...everyone is entitled to their own views and beliefs.
I'm looking forward to my journey out to Missouri. We will be leaving here the end of June and driving across the country. I do hope the weather will be nice to us. I do hope to meet many of you one day. I'd like to have a party once I've gotten settled in, I think that would be fun.
Thank you all for being so kind and thoughtful, and for all the wonderful information you have so graciously provided me with. I look forward to hearing from you all....Wionee

If you need help finding anything or making the change, just let me know. Be glad to help you get to know JTown! Good Luck!

wionee is on a distinguished road
Default Hi Everyone

The duplex I purchased is in a neighbor. I've never lived with neighbors. I'm really looking forward to experiencing the next door neighbor. This house I bought sits on a quarter acre about 1/2 mile or so from the University of Missouri. Right across the street is a beautiful retirement facility. I'm so excited about having a small lot to mow, and a garden I can create that isn't too big. Here in Washington I can't keep up with all the stuff I've planted, and the slugs eat everything.
I'm planning on building a fence around the new house, and I'd like to make some changes to the back yard. Put in some trees, and build a deck. Oh, and I want to put some larger windows in this building. I'm going to need a good carpenter, so if anyone has any suggestion's or knows a good person, let me know...please. I'm not sure how long the building season is in Missouri or if a person can work outside all year round. But I guess I'll find out. Anyway you all are so very nice. I look forward to meeting all of you and having a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Wionee

Have been looking at Joplin for awhile, family lives still in NW Mo (Maitland, Graham, New Point, Maryville) so not sure where I'll hang my hat. Good Luck with your new life.
Jim and Kim! How did you decide to live in Cabool? What made you finally come to agreement to live in that part of town? If you don't mind explaining? Please!

CaboolBound is on a distinguished road
Hi kareybear.... well, we were in a car accident in October of 2004 and now my husband has a spinal cord injury. He can walk with a cane but will never be able to go back to work. I stay home and take care of him. We were looking online to see where we could live inexpensively in case we were to lose any of the benefits that we are recieving from the insurance company. We looked for about a year and came across southern MO. We decided to take a road trip this past October and check out the area and loved it. We looked at our new home and knew that it was for us. We came back down in November to close and we will be moving in 3 weeks. We couldn't have found anything better. Everything is cheaper than up here in Michigan. We could never have been able to afford what we have in Cabool up here in Michigan. We did a lot of research on the town, schools and state. We pay almost $3000 a year in property taxes here in Michigan, we only have a 3 bedroom, 950 sq.ft home on a city lot. In MO we have a 3 bedroom, 1600+ sq.ft home, 3 tier deck with a pool on 5 acres and we only pay $273 a year in property taxes. We are cutting our expenses by at least 66% by moving. This will be a breath of fresh air for us. My husband says that he just wants to be able to drink a cup of coffee on the deck in the morning. The view from the deck is rolling hills and a farm a ways away. It is a piece of Heaven. I have pictures but they are packed. When we get settled I am going to post them. You just can't believe how wonderful it is unless you see it.
God Bless,
Kim and Jim
