Most progressive areas in Missouri?
Hi,
My husband and I are into environmentalism, self-sufficiency (like going off the grid), health foods, animal rights, nonviolence, and other progressive things. We also like being in a community with others who enjoy both learning and sharing their knowledge on such topics. Where would we find the most welcoming community in Missouri for this kind of mindset? Are there any small-to-mid-sized towns in Missouri where we would fit in pretty well? What's the status of St. Louis?
Thanks!

If you are opinionated on animal rights, I would venture to say that MO is not the place to you. Everyone hunts in season. If you are set on MO, the the bigger cities would be your best bet. STL, KCMO.

I haven't been in the state long enough to be able to suggest to you where to look for what you are asking about but I don't think your program wouldn't pan out to well here in southwest MO. I'm not sure exactly where all of the liberals hang out in this state but any large urban area like St. Louis is bound to have their share. What exactly are "animal rights" as I have a coupla poodles that are pretty darned smart and I am NOT kidding! I can just see these little stinkers causing me some serious legal trouble if they get the word about their "rights".

You may want to consider Oregon. Missouri is full of gun lovin' rednecks who own 4 wheel drives and 4 wheelers. I know, I am one of them! I eat everything I shoot so it's all good!
Liberals in MO? Well maybe in the Central West End area of downtown Saint Louis, we do try to limit the number that make it in each year.
Non violence? Most of the small towns have nothing more to offer on Saturday night than watching the red necks leave their 4 wheel drives to pound on each other after to many brewskies. I speak from first hand experience there to.
Off the grid? If you pull that off folks will think you're cookin' crack and have something to hide. That means many night-time visits from other crack-heads who think your movin' in on their territory.
Health food? We like to deep fry everything, including the critters we shoot. I would bet that at some point some red-neck Missouri boy has deep fat fried a liberal just for grins!
A deep fried liberal would be tasty with an appetizer of toasted ravioli, our version of health food. It's a Saint Louis original!
Yep, Oregon sounds real nice now doesn't it!

I'm not sure anywhere in Missouri is going to quite fit the things for which you are searching as your ideal place. The more liberal parts of the states are going to be either KCMO & St. Louis; perhaps Columbia as it is a college town. Even so, I would say things tend to be more middle of the road in these places. By "nonviolence", are you asking for low crime rates? That could be a downside of KC or STL. What do you consider small to medium sized towns?
As a side note, my spouse and I lived in Sedalia for a couple of years, and we consider ourselves to be liberal. While we didn't have the same views on things in life as our neighbors, everyone we encountered was still very nice to us and very friendly.
Oh, regarding the Oregon suggestion....though I'm sure some of that was in jest, not all of Oregon is accepting of environmentalists...especially eastern Oregon! The coastal parts of Oregon are left leaning, but inland and the eastern half of Oregon is a whole other world.

I am not really sure where hippie lives in these parts of the State but I have to say you should consider California because there are alot of liberal people there not that is wrong and most people in Cali loves to eat healthy. There are alot of great health food store through out of California. I say Sonoma county, any where along the beach area community, Santa Barbara, and Berkeley....etc. The list can go on and on.

Know what I think? It's ok... to have a different life style. Frankly it's no one's business how liberal you choose to be. In life we find those who agree with us and those who don't. However, a decesion to live somewhere should be based on what you want out of life and the joy that comes with it. Not, in my opinion... what other's think of it. Lets learn to embrace each other's idea's and behaviors, it makes for a better world for all of us. Wionee

....and it's OK to be conservative and it too is nobody's business just how conservative you choose to be The OP asked a simple question, one that if I would have asked, as a conservative, in the San Fransisco forum would have been met with MUCH harsher responses I'm sure. Of course I would expect that having lived in CA for the last 40 years and being very well tuned into the political machinations of that state. C-D has a political forum where those kind of discussions are probably best held as I believe (my opinion only) that the state forums should be used to help each other out with state and local issues and provide valuable information to those looking to relocate here or perhaps to move to another area of the state.

I guess I spoke out of line concerning the progressiveness of Missouri. Having not lived in Missouri, yet... I am in no way familiar with state and local issues that provide valuable information to those of you who are searching for it. I suppose I'll leave my own idea's regarding these issues to those of you whom are better informed.
However, my first opinion still stands...Wionee

MO is very progressive, the state legislature just passed both the Castle Doctrine and PTA elimination, the Gov just needs to ink it. Now that is what I call progress! (yes I use the term "progress" the proper way) If you are a liberal, stand up and be proud of it, don't hide behind silly focus group. media driven coined terms like "progressives" ....c'mon we know who ya really are I have a TON of liberal friends and I love em...we just see things in a different light. I will never change their minds and vise versa and that is fine by all of us and that is what makes this country the best on the planet....(although there are some liberals that really hate this country )
