I'd live within 20 minutes of Springfield on about 5 acres+ (500 would be better). Springfield is the biggest small town I've ever known. It is politically and socially conservative without being stuffy. Plenty of dining and entertainment without many of the problems of larger cities.
I would not live in any town smaller than 10,000 pop. unless it was within 20 minutes of a larger city. I would not live in the heart of either KC or St. Louis. I would hesitate to move back to Columbia (too focused on the University and too liberal for my tastes) although it's a great town in many respects.

For me Urbana and I to want to live in my Grandparents old house. It still stands but vacant and the new owners live in a mobile home on the farm and have let the house go for the last 25 years so sad to. But then again any were in Missouri but S.L. or K.C. would be better then were I am at now LOL

I'd vote for Columbia. College town, the sub shop!!!, Shakespeare's pizza, G&D Steakhouse, 2 hours from KC and STL, an hour or so from the lake....honey, pack the bags!

So many choices!
Well, my husband and I were limited by price when we moved here but we really love where we live in Ozark/Sparta's countryside!
We also loved the town of Carthage (near Joplin) and looked to buy there and another neat town, called Neosho, south of there. If money was no option, we would love to live in one of the old turn-of-the-century homes in Carthage.
Then again, we could do the same here in the Ozark, area, since we really feel we found a great area to live in!
We also found an adorable town on the east side of the state called Sainte Genevieve. It's along the Mississippi River and is one of...if not THE...oldest community in the state. Simply charming!
Since I'm a genealogist, I'm tempted to say somewhere up above Columbia, MO, in the countryside where my mother grew up...but their weather is harsher and they don't have the hills that we love in the Ozarks.
One reason we love it here in the Ozarks is that we love all the hills and trees! And when it is green like now, it is simply gorgeous!
By the way, I've uploaded a few of my favorite pictures of Missouri so others can enjoy them. Here are two links to those photos:

I hope you enjoy them!
