Missouri, culturally is divided, but since Missouri is one single state and it did in effect secede and is givin an honorary star on the Confederate Flag, it is technically a Southern state. Just like Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio are Northern states with plenty of Southern culture in their Southern areas, Missouri is a Southern state with plenty of Northern culture in it's Northern areas. The central areas are a blend of the two. The Midwest is a region of the North. Missouri, as was stated, did more or less side with the South. It's below the Mason-Dixon Line. It's a Soutehrn state.

Mea Culpa....
We are most fortunate to have ShadowCaver and Autumngal (not to mention Plains10, Boof and da jammer) as City-Data moderators! Thanks to you guys for keeping us on an even keel--me especially! We can get pretty passionate about a lot of stuff, expected and not so expected.
So just a brief post to thank our mods for the good, hard work they do here! They often have to walk a diplomatic tightrope in seeing to it that the rest of us stay faithful to the C-D terms of service.

Florida- NOT Southern anymore except for geographical location! We've disowned ya'll. Too many Cubans and Snow Birds live there now.
Alabama
Georgia
Louisiana-
Texas
The Middle (Mid) South-4 states:
Virginia
Arkansas
Tennessee
North Carolina
The Upper (Border) South-6 states:
Delaware- Again, geographical location ONLY. They did NOT fight with us in the War of Northern Agression. They were on the side of the North.
Maryland- Sided with the North
West Virginia- Also sided with the North.
Kentucky
Missouri- voted to stay with the Union, but ended up fighting
Oklahoma- Where in the Blue blazes do the Okies come in on this?!

Just because you're behind the Mason-Dixon line, doesnt mean people who know their history wont call you a Yankee.
Delaware to me= Yankee.

Colddiamond102, like many Southerners, you really don't know much about West Virginia history. But I don't blame you, it's very complicated. I will just say that West Virginia was split about 50/50 during the Civil War, WBTS. It was the most Confederate of the border states. Some historians, like James Carter Linger who wrote "Confederate Military Units of West Virginia", believe that Confederate WV outnumbered Union WV. AJF131 is familiar with this map, but you may not be. It's the counties of WV that voted for Secession. I know this is about Missouri, and I will butt out now. Just wanted to correct some false history.

I made my statement based on the fact that the establishment of West Virginia came from resistance to join the Confederacy. Until the War, its history was linked with Virginia.
While it DID supply soldiers to the Confederacy, according to the below site it supplied more troops to the Union than to the South.
Therefore I think it sided with the Union more.
Both WV and Missouri straddled the fence on the issue. All fence-straddlers are open to suspicion, otherwise the current debate about Missouri would not be here!
