May get a job in Clinton, MO where to live?
Hello Everyone
I have been interested in a company in the Clinton, MO area. I'm just curious as to everyone's opinion of the area? Where is a good place to live? Is Kansas City the closest "big" town w/ good restaurants and stuff? What would be some good towns to check out for apartments/condos say halfway between Clinton, and KC? Any help/advice would be appreciated!!

Clinton is a nice town. I have several friends in Clinton and they like living there very well. I live relatively nearby and go to Clinton regularly.
Clinton has all your basic amenities - WalMart (open 24 hours with a grocery dept.), bowling alley, skating rink, multiple restaurants (I recommend El Sombre's, Smith's Express, and Brown's), grocery store, two pharmacies, a hospital, multiple doctors/specialists, decent public schools and I believe there is a Christian school, although I think it only covers K through 8th grades, not 100% sure. They have a community center and I believe it is free or very low cost for residents to use the gym, pool, etc. You are also within easy commuting distance of University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg (~35 minutes north-east), as well as multiple universities in KC. State Fair Community College is also just beginning to offer classes in Clinton, I think, in a complex just north of the hospital.
Frankly if you want to work in Clinton and play in Kansas City, I would personally recommend living in or near Clinton. The cost of living is significantly lower, and prices go up accordingly the closer you get to KC.
Clinton is also about halfway between Kansas City and Springfield. Kansas City is certainly much larger than Springfield, but you will find that for every local that prefers to go to KC for big-town fun, just as many prefer Springfield (or even Branson), which offer most of what KC offers. Clinton also has a fairly wide range of apartments, condos, duplexes, etc.
If you really want to be between Clinton and KC, I would recommend Harrisonville, maybe even Belton if you don't mind a longer communte. Harrisonville is about 35 minutes north of Clinton, and an easy drive to KC. Belton is 2 towns north of Harrisonville. Both have many apartments, condos, duplexes, etc. IMO the only advantage of living closer to KC is that if you end up not working in Clinton, you'll obviously have a lot more job opportunities near the city.
The job market in this area, as hillman stated, can be rough, but it really depends on what you do, what your skills are, etc. For job/apartment listings, there are a couple of different publications, but I prefer The Kayo; you can call 660-885-2281 and I imagine you can pay to receive it, although it is mailed out for free locally. The best online job source I have found for this area is missouricareersource.com, although searching general job websites (ex. careerbuilder) for jobs in this area is not the best method (IMO). You need to review local publications, check larger companies' websites, etc.
Best of luck.

I think you would like Clinton, MO, if you like small town living. There is a hospital, Wal-Mart, a few places to eat besides the fast-food places. The people are nice. It gets very quiet after dark. If you want to live in a larger town, Warrensburg is a nice College town. It's pretty quiet also. If you want bigger than that, Kansas City, Lee's Summit, and Harrisonville would be towns to consider as a place to live. We live in a big city, and we are ready for the slower pace and quieter lifestyle of a small town like Clinton. One thing you want to consider is what you would do if you for some reason lost your job in Clinton. For that reason, you might want to consider renting in Clinton before actually buying a property in Clinton. Personally, I believe the prices of most of the housing in Clinton is quite inflated. I would hate for you to pay an inflated price, and then have to sell at a loss. Be cautious about that. Maybe you could pay the local bank to give you an appraisal on any home you are interested in with the minimum $ amount down. It might give you a more accurate price on the housing market there. A lot of the smaller towns around Clinton seem to be losing population, so I would be careful about buying in areas like that. It's the same situation the entire country is seeing these days - who would have thought that Michigan and Ohio would have a mass exodus? Just be careful about the housing situation. Clinton is a nice town, and if I got a job there today I would be happy to move there. Best of luck to you!
