Peperosso:

Thanks for speaking up. It's nice to have a fellow current Columbia resident speak up.

You said it well in your quote "There are more issues here than crime and everyone is entitled to their opinion."

Columbia is not a 'bad' or 'dangerous' place (per say) to live. You just have to use your best judgement and be cautious; riding your bicycle at 3am alone would not be great judgement.

I truly did not appreciate being called 'overprotective or having issues of my own' (or however that was stated)for the comment I made about my 15 year old son not being allowed to walk alone.

It was (I believe) this school year that dentists wife from out of town who rented a small house near the high school (here in Columbia, MO) to lure 15 and 16 year old boys over for sex, drugs and whatever else was busted (geez! sicko~ 40+ boys involved). Thank god that parent realized something odd was going on with his son disappearing at lunch hour and after school. (great job to that dad for taking the time to follow his son in the middle of the day.)

Today's world is probably a different place everywhere in the world since 2006 and Columbia is no different. I certainly have no vendetta against Columbia or any other town for that matter. I was just trying to be realistic.

Anyway, thanks again.

Here are some Columbia crime stats. I don't know what you've been smoking, Sunshine (I suppose you've gotten it from one of the many thugs in Columbia), but crime in most categories (including violent crimes) has gone DOWN in Columbia (or, at worst, remained steady) in recent years:

Law Enforcement Statistics
Violent Crimes

Rate Per 100K People
2001 516
2002 478
2003 482
2004 480
2005 528
2006 497
2007 645
2008 388

Year Murder, Man-Slaughter Forcible Rape Robbery Aggravated Assault
2001 4 16 140 279
2002 2 31 90 287
2003 2 17 84 319
2004 1 17 106 305
2005 7 19 114 337
2006 2 23 113 322
2007 3 30 141 443
2008 5 19 138 230

Property Crimes

Rate Per 100K People
2001 4,066
2002 3,999
2003 3,734
2004 3,378
2005 3,394
2006 3,357
2007 3,476
2008 3,911

Year Burglary Larceny, Theft Motor Vehicle Theft
2001 455 2,822 181
2002 432 2,801 194
2003 459 2,632 175
2004 428 2,438 151
2005 506 2,386 173
2006 544 2335 226
2006 594 2509 220
2006 836 2968 147

The ONLY category that's gone UP significantly is burglary, and the last year reported for that (unlike the other categories' last years) is 2006 - when I still rode my bike in the middle of the night in Columbia.

It was reported last Week on one of the news stations that crime in Columbia MO has went down the last Year with the exception of Assaults and Rapes which is now higher than the national average. If I can find it again I will post the link, here is a site that posts those numbers that Alicia posted.
Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed

No matter where you live you should always be safe, don’t end up as one of these statistics.

Columbia is a horrible place to live. The people are rude and lacking in common sense. Everything is done backwards and they reserve hospitality only for themselves. I would NEVER recommend that anyone live there or even visit there. The schools are good, but based on how everyone acts your kid would grow up to be an a**hole and not have any common sense.
