oddly enough, the areas that I have seen that have prisons are rather nice.....fulton has one, as does chillicothe, booneville, and bowling green. And none of them strike you as a 'bad' place.

Reading all the towns mentioned reminds me of a trip I made to family in Idaho. We were driving and went past a town named Hope and shortly later passed by the next town,Beyond Hope. FYI

Actually used to live ~12 miles from there... the town is smallish, actually quite small, has really cool people, a friendly lumber yard, use to have an excellent corner burger & ice cream joint, hosts a rodeo every year, was named for the deer salt lick nearby. Its ~1/2 way between Rolla and Cabool, and gateway to many scenic areas. Oh, and yea, there is a prison nearby too.

I have been through Hope, Arizona several times. Right outside the city limits is a BIG sign that says " You are now beyond Hope" we always laugh every time we see it! My hubby bought a t-shirt at the gas station there (that is all that is pretty much there) that says that, he always gets compliments on it.

I've since moved back to NH where I belong, but when I was living in MO a few years back, one of my favorite towns was DEFIANCE Gotta love a town called Defiance!!
Someone mentioned the butchering of French in the towns, however we were never quite sure in St. Charles, when getting directions, wasn't sure for awhile if Youngerman or Jungerman was correct... You want some towns that are mis-pronounced, c'mon up to Massachusetts

You do realize that Humansville was founded by a guy by the last name of HUMAN. That's how they get HUMANSVILLE. PLUS the show PETICOAT JUNCTION was filmed in Humansville. That's where the hootervill comes from.
You should really "search" before you make a comment on a town.
There's other small towns with some names not common. Like sparta, Weaubleau, Morrisville, Van Town, halfway, Hermitage, wheatland, Nevada those are just a few. I;m sure someone could say those are funny names, but that's what makes MO. Humansville isn't bad yes it could be bigger, but you just have to know how some of the towns come up with there names.

I've always wondered about the names of a few places, as well. Mostly Roach, MO and Tightwad. I recently found out that Roach was named after the Roach family in the 1800's. I don't know if anybody knows how Tightwad got it's name. I've also always been humored by Warsaw, MO (because Warsaw is the capital of Poland). I think all of the strange names add to the character of Missouri, though. They're always fun to joke about, but I do think they add a little charm and character.
