Question Why is Missouri called the SHOW ME STATE?

I've always been curious to know this.

My grandfather always told us it was because if someone tells you something, Missourians would always come back with oh yeah, show me.

I have always wondered about that too. My dad is always saying, well I'm from Missouri so you will have to show me.

We've got the "I don't believe you show me mentality".

Even though he was a Democrat, I've always said that Harry S. Truman was a total bad@ss and the perfect President for his business acumen and No-B.S. mentality. Reagan was a close second. Pretty much anyone after them was not cut out for the job.

Default Why is Missouri called the SHOW ME STATE?

"However the slogan originated, it has since passed into a different meaning entirely, and is now used to indicate the stalwart, conservative, noncredulous character of Missourians."

That works for me. Missourians are very independent in nature and where government is concerned, would just as soon be left alone. I find that independence of thought quite refreshing!

When I lived in Nevada, I used to say, "My momma is from Missouri, so you need to show me."

Now that I live in Missouri, I wonder at the slogan. A lot of the time, Missourians don't have it to show!

It means that Missourians are blessed with a healthy dose of skepticism!

What I find amazing about the slogan is that people from all over the globe automatically associate it with Missouri.

I've been to more countries than states. Persons ask where I'm from and many of them ask,"Isn't that the show me state?"
