The two hotels that are closest are Hampton Inn and Drury Inn, just off of I-44 Exit #272 (Valley Park/Fenton). The Hampton Inn is the newest one (though the Drury looks to be in excellent shape as well). We put our parents up in rooms at the Hampton and they said the rooms were excellent (we saw them, too, so we can at least vouch for appearance ) These hotels are just across the overpass from Valley Park (i.e. less than a mile).
If no rooms are available there (or the price doesn't work for you), the next exit East on 44 (#274, Bowles Ave) has a Motel 6, the Fenton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Stratford Inn, Pear Tree Inn, and TownePlace Suites by Marriott. PV me if you want phone numbers for any of these places or any additional info.

I live close to both the Hampton and Drury...they were built at the same
time about 3 years ago. Both, as noted, are pretty nice. They are also
next to a Starbucks which gives them a couple of bonus points in my book.
