I don't know why this guy is even going to fight GSP. He doesn't deserve it. His UFC debut wasn't impressive and it looked like he lost. Yahoo Sports puts him as 2nd top welterweight, lol, which is a joke. He will lose against GSP and his name won't be on that list anymore, the next guy who GSP fights will replace him on that list, even though he probably won't deserve to be there.

So who deserves it, since you don't think the guy who left a belt from the ufc's biggest competition. Who in your infinite wisdom would you suggest?

Jon Fitch deserves it more.

Does he? Considering gsp already beat him down not long ago and fitch has only faced 1 guy on the top 10 I would say he is close but shields is still a title holder for the biggest competition and Dana wants to say how strikeforce has/had paper champs.

I'd be fine with either Fitch or Shields being considered the #1 contender, but GSP put an absolute beatdown on Fitch last time and as Rigas mentioned Shields has some impressive credentials outside the UFC which historically (see Anderson Silva) has led to fast track title shots.

One could make a reasonable claim that Shields is a better grappler than GSP, which I don't think you could say about anyone else fighting at 170 or less, so it is a far more intriguing matchup.

GSP is going to make this Jake Shields character look like a fool. A lot of people forgot about Dan Hardy, some don't even remember his name, they just say " The guy with the Mohawk GSP defeated."

What is your point here?

He's made all the top contenders look like fools, what are they supposed to do not have him fight anymore? Just retire the belt and dissolve the division?

Are you thinking it would be more interesting to have him punk the same group of welterweights again instead of having him face a top contender he hasn't fought before?

Hypnosis you obviously don't follow MMA. For the last 3 years people (us MMA fans) have wanted the GSP vs Shields match. I can't think of a more deserving ww out there than Sheilds to get the title shot.

It is well known that Shields was brought in specifically to give GSP a fight for the title, it would be stupid to pass this opportunity up.

the only 170er out there who MAY be more deserving would be nick diaz. diaz will never come back to the ufc though so i dont think that is happening. it is a fight i would really like to see.
