I understand. To me it just seems easily off balance to reach across and pin, then add in pulling the same side arm IMO, "gives" him the potential sweep. To me, a hip bump/shrimp towards the left side (in this case) plus a push in the shoulder with the right arm would almost allow the bottom man to sit up and roll you.
I like this set up, not only for the "simple choke" but for the same side arm lock on the "pulled arm". It is similar to a same side armbar from knee on belly which I love. I love the KOB position, especially in a fight. Most people don't know the right way (in a street fight don't know any way) to escape and give simple chokes, or same/opposite side armlocks.
been a while here is a pretty good tech video (side note, one of the brothers is wearing an animal fight wear gi, says fight like an animal, my instructor, eric wiliams is the owner/creator of animal fight wear)
it is videos like this that make me say helio gracie didnt "invent" or "perfect" anything he simply trained old school judo, maybe in a little different way but old school judo none the less. check out his book and it is a near mirror image a jigoro kanos book on judo.
