Keeping it simple judo+boxing, try to keep the same stance for both. Make sure you get fairly good at newaza, you don't have to be an expert on the ground for self defence purposes, but good enough to deal with the situation if it goes there. Learn to play and pass guard and don't get into the habit of turtling all the time. With extended newaza time now turtle isn't anywhere as effective a defence as it once was anyway.

Or if you want all bases covered judo+bjj+muay thai. Plus some sort of knife/stick defence (kali/escrima possibly?) Plus learn to run.

What's the best way to defend against the strikes coming from a heavier attacker?

It takes a significant amount of dedicated training to bridge the gap against someone much bigger and stronger. A small guy fighting a much bigger dude is kind of like a woman fighting a man. And the bigger man can be trained too, so then you're even more ****'ed. There are no magic moves.....if there are, then everyone will just train these moves only.

Being a fighter is the highest form of training, but it's a long and arduous task. It has to include taking real ass beatings in the gym as apart of training and you'd have to enjoy it. Otherwise, you'd quit and/or more likely be just a faker who'd most likely get raped should a real situation arises in the streets. The good news being, we still live in a relatively civilized society in most places in the USA, although that's changing.

But since you're asking this, I'm going to assume that you're not trained and maybe starting out. Probably the best for a Noob, but never guaranteed, BLOCK (against most likely a punch to the head)....is to open your palm, and grab your ear while extending/pointing your elbow up & at your attacker....while turning your body slightly inward (where your elbow is between your own chest)....and always maintaining eyes on him....this is with the same SIDE hand that the punch is coming from.......so if he's throwing a right punch, then you're blocking with your left hand grabbing the ear.
