Most practitioners of any martial art would be hesitant to classify one, because it implies it doesn't use elements of the other.

Gun to my head? External. But that's just me.

I'd say internal. I am nowhere near a MMA expert, but in my opinion it has less to do with strength and more to do with technique. You have to look at a guy like Royce Gracie who took down guys twice his size with BJJ.

A central concept in Jiu-jitsu, as well as many other grappling arts, is the use of the opponent’s force and energy against him or her. By blending into the opponent, the martial artist can redirect the attacker’s energy, rather than meet force with force.

Over the years of reading various material about Jiu-Jitsu in general I've seen these types of things being said about Jiu-Jitsu. This is what got me wondering if BJJ and Jiu-Jitsu styles in general are considered internal styles?
