Hmm, I haven't used "human cockfighting"...but thanks. Maybe I will. The funny thing about the "hard core" MMA fans is that they take pride in not being mainstream...yet they want to argue that it has supplanted boxing as the top "fighting" sport.

So, do the fans want to be completely mainstream (sure looks like it on this thread) or do they want to maintain their underground status?

Like I've said before, if you have to go around saying that you are the top fighting sport...and that you are better than boxing....then obviously you are not. You don't see boxing saying how they are on top because everyone already knows that.

I want it to maintain underground status, but it is already too late

With "The ulimate fighter (TUF) it is becoming trendy

I am already seeing more quidos, leftover grunge kids, and trustafarians going to my old gym

A lot of these new-comers or TUFers as we like to call them, see themselves reflected in the cast members of the reality show.

That is why dana chose those people

But for me the UFC/MMA is much more exciting. The Pay Per Views are much better also. For 45 bucks we get 7-8 fights. And you dont have to wait long in between fights for more action.

Boxing is pretty boring these days. Look at the heavyweights , can the average person name the Champs? Back in the Tyson days i enjoyed boxing alot. But Dela Hoya vs Mayweather is a joke. Every round looked the same. I miss Hagler & Hearns.

So for now I like the MMA world. But at times i'll tune into a boxing match.

well said...I agree. I'm die hard MMA now and actually hope to compete one day. I definitely miss the old days in Boxing as you mentioned, and with Jones and Hopkins past their prime and heading towards retirement, it's just not the same anymore. I love the sweet science, but it is being overshadowed by MMA. I do think the two can co-exist, but pro boxing needs to make a drastic comeback.

True..And people could not believe that someone as small as Royce could beat opponents much stronger and bigger than him at that time. His mistake was leaving the sport and not growing with it. I will say it was painful to see him fight Hughes a couple of years back, but that's an example of how much more well rounded fighters are today than at the inception and early days of the UFC.

TO the point of MMA and some one dying. In MMA the focus is spread across the body, where as in boxing you will get alot more shots to the head. A boxer is going to take alot more punches to his head than an MMA fighter during a fight.

I got hooked watching the 1st season of TUF, and the Griffin Bonner fight sealed man that 1st round was awesome.

As a person who grew up wrestling all through school and college, I personally love MMA!

I think it is far safer than boxing, think about it in boxing the idea is to hit the other person so hard they have head trauma and black out. In MMA there multiple ways to win, and they are far more technical than boxing like Submissions, Kicks, Knees, Elbows, Body Cranks and also Punches.

If someone gets trapped in armbar submission, look they are not receiving any head trauma.

For those who think it is just 2 laying on top of each other, well I would just like to say people used to say the same thing about Wrestling...however they couldn't be more WRONG. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it is rolling around with each other.

Do a search for:
Fedor Emelianenko
BJ Penn
Anderson Silva

Watch some of their fights and tell me if you don't think that is exciting!

Check this out:
CroCop vs. Fedor

What was shute(sp?) fighting back in the day? Same thing - less rules? I liked Gracie a lot too . The Hughes fight was okay but you could tell that it hurt him to hurt Gracie. You could see the respect that he had for Gracie's advancment of the sport. I like that they have weight classes now and not so much of a "Steet Fighter" method of setting up matches (a friend of mine had his eye popped out fighting in Japan back in the 80's). The technicality of the moves, excapes, and sometimes just luck are what drew me to liking the sport. (Although I trained with some guys back in Cali for a minute and got my butt whipped.) The sport has more rules now for safety so it doesn't seem as lop-sided as those old UFC 1, 2 and 3 fights. The guys (and now girls) are in phenominal shape while still being agile.
Boxing has no stars now. I like Floyd Jr. but who else is there? The era of Hearns, Haglar, Leonard, and "No mas" has passed with too little to replace it. Watching a young Mike was thrilling. (but agrivating after paying for pay-per-view). Boxing is a great sport with a great history. It's just that it seems a little past it's prime with no new rivalries to keep the sport in the spotlight.
ESPN only bashes because it missed the boat on getting any rights to the sport. If Disney owned an MMA league they (ESPN) would hype it as the sport of the new millenium.
Both sports are great, but for now - MMA is just more exiting.
