Did he just hold it longer or how was he able to do it you think? Also, why do the jailers and cops charge people with attempted murder automatically when they use objects other than their hands in coking someone out?
Well its not easy to strangle someone to death period but if you take a sheet or shirt or belt or cord or what ever and tie it around their neck then sure it's easier then with your hand. Generally this is a wind choke not a blood strangle. Cut off the wind for 10 minutes and someone will die.

As for being charged higher because of the sheet, put it this way, if you punch someone with the intent to kill them well it's hard to prove you had the intent to kill so it's just assault. Use a baseball bat and now it's agrevated assault with a deadly weapon or attempted murder. Same goes with the sheet, choke with your hand and it's just assault but add a "weapon" (the cloth around a neck) and it ups the charges. The thing about tieing something around someone's neck, you don't even have to be there when they die.

Choking involves the property that's states a human is not involved in the act of blocking air flow to the human under the duress. It may be cherry lodge in the throat, a branch falls out of a tree then pins a person in a manner which stops the natural act of respiration, get the picture now? It involves stopping the exchange of the oxygen / carbon cycle with out human interaction(s).

Strangulation is an act purposely committed by a human unto another creature. You do not place another human in a choke hold, you purposely constrict air AND/OR blood flow to lungs AND/OR brain for the sole purpose to render unconsciousness AND/OR death. This action can be confined to an event that is either defense or offence, but used as a verb to quell AND/OR kill an action against an creature.
