What about the people who want to use the brains and want something besides a blue collar job? What about the high tech talent? If you don't want your best and brightest to leave, Mobile should attract new businesses to its city.

I'm in agreement. I was just stating that there is no lack of living-salary jobs - as the poster had insinuated.

The cost of living is still very low so money goes pretty far. Mobile DOES attract new businesses like Thyssen-Krupp and Airbus ( which is still here, by the way- that tanker contract is not all they have going on). We have Xante and a lot of others. Commercial construction companies that have become national companies. Several of the advertising agencies around here are big players as well. There are plenty of 100K+ a year jobs, and ones that pay more than that. Then of course, bankers, lawyers, and doctors. But you have to hustle, seems like. I know plenty of lawyers, etc. that don't seem to do that great.

The downside may be that it is pretty competitive for those jobs which is probably why some of the children aren't able to come home. I remember once my hubby's company hired this guy who had been working for really, really large company, was supposedly brilliant- turns out he was horrible and really couldn't function in a company where mistakes could cause some big problems. He was used to previous company soaking up his and others' mistakes. So he wasn't good enough, they fired him. But if you have actual skills, it's all good.

But yeah, actual amount of people making great money is probably pretty low compared to other cities, all things considered.
