Airbus, meanwhile, bounced back with a landmark victory of its own — capturing a record contract for new planes from American Airlines and reviving prospects for aircraft assembly in Mobile.
The Dallas-based airline announced last week the biggest aircraft order in history: 460 total planes with a list price of more than $38 billion.
The deal — code named “Project Apollo” — was the product of weeks of intense negotiations with Boeing and Airbus, and at first glance looked like a win for both sides. American would purchase 260 of Airbus’ single-aisle A320 jets and 200 of Boeing’s 737 narrow-bodies.
But while both competitors claimed success, experts and industry observers said Airbus was the decisive winner.
Aerospace analyst Michel Merluzeau described the outcome as an “Airbus smack down,” noting that American has flown Boeing planes since the 1950s and hadn’t bought an Airbus jet in nearly 25 years.

While American Airlines is headquartered in Dallas/Ft. Worth, I don't think they give a rip where these planes are built as long as they're built, built well and on time.

Read the article further. The AA contract order has already been placed with EADS Airbus, now it's up to EADS Airbus to decide where the planes will be produced, i.e., if they're finally going to move some of their production to North America from Europe and then if to Mobile's Brookley Field.

From the article PortCity posted:

Quote:
In a detailed analysis published by FlightGlobal.com, ace aerospace reporter Jon Ostrower projected that Airbus could shift production of the A320 to Mobile later this decade to meet a growing backlog of orders for the popular plane.

That timeline could be accelerated, according to other analysts, if Airbus can rack up more sales in the U.S. The Toulouse, France-based company and Boeing reportedly are in negotiations for major orders from Southwest and Delta, as the airlines face pressure to respond to American’s big bet.

Airbus has long sought to establish production in North America as a way to balance its financial exposure, protecting it against swings in the European economy. The company faces resistance from European political leaders and its labor unions, who don’t want to give up jobs, but a few big orders from U.S. airlines could provide the momentum needed to cross the Atlantic.

The company’s strong ties to Mobile, where Airbus operates a state-of-the-art engineering center, could put Brookley back in the aircraft game.

“Alabama,” said aerospace analyst Richard Aboulafia, “would be a natural choice.”
Always so many "ifs" on these projects... it would be nice to see Mobile finally come out on top and the winner in this one!

I agree BstYet2Be, its always "ifs" on these projects but if EADS does do so, and does select Mobile, it would 2-3x the jobs as the tanker contract(for Mobile). Especially if they get orders from Delta & Southwest, which could indeed push them to constructing a US Plant meaning even more jobs.

Hope we get this, because this would be a big win for our area and maybe EADS and other companies would help in renovating Brookley for extra incentives, making Brookley even more attractive to the International community.
