MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - In the coming weeks, Mobile Mayor Sam Jones will be presenting the city council with a grand vision of the future of the Port City.
Imagine this: A downtown park with dancing fountains and a waterfront walkway complete with shops, restaurants and a public fish market.
It's a tall order that could be just a few years away.
Construction on the Gulfquest Maritime Museum is progressing full steam ahead. The project will be completed next year, and it could spark a tourism boom along Mobile's waterfront. But Mobile Mayor Sam Jones says it's only the beginning.
"We'd like to see some retail over there," said Jones. "We'd like to see a restaurant over there."
Mayor Jones said several developers are looking closely at transforming Mobile's waterfront. He said plans have been in the works over the past few years, but the recession put many of the ideas on hold.
The city owns a piece property between the convention center and the state port authority. Mayor Jones envisions transforming the gravel lot into a public market, similar to the famous landmark in Seattle.
Mayor Jones said Mobile's active port, which is rich with industry, would provide a scenic backdrop for the new tourist areas.

I want to see the State Docks facilities along Water Street, from the Convention Center to Beaureguard Street, converted into a waterfront mixed use development.
