Question Mobile as a home for a young quadraplegic?

Our 20 year old son broke his neck in a fall in April and is now in rehab in Atlanta learning to survive as a quadraplegic. He will complete his rehab in December and does not have a home to return to and does not want to stay in Atlanta. We, his parents, are looking for a "wheelchair/severely handicapped friendly" city within a days drive from Atlanta to relocate him to start a new life. Ideally, we want to find an accessible 1 BR 1 BA apartment in a "compact neighborhood", close to a few basic necessity stores, shopping at a "social security disability income" level of rent. We are considering Mobile, AL. Any comments or guidance? Specific leads to suitable communities and neighborhoods in the Mobile area are most appreciated. How is the public transportation? Does it accomodate folks is wheelchairs? Is there a "wheelchair group" or organization? Or, is this a "pipe dream"? Thanks.

I would strongly recommend Birmingham vs. Mobile.

The Lakeshore Foundation, located in the Birmingham suburb of Homewood is one of the nation's premier rehabilitaion facilities and is extraordinarily focused on individuals who are confined to wheelchairs.

Lakeshore Foundation

Birmingham is one of the nation's leading healthcare centers and has many more resources available for a person like your son.

I would call the Lakeshore foundation as soon as possible to get a complete understanding of the facilities and programs they have available.

Good luck and God Bless.
