Default vegetarians visiting Mobile

we're visiting family for the first time and they live in Mobile. both my daughter (3.5) and I are organic vegetarians (yes dairy and egg, no seafood) and we're wondering if we'll be able to eat anything, lol. my dad's from north carolina and frankly he can't cope with my vegetarianism, and it's been more than 25 years (as a southern chef, he somehow feels he went wrong somewhere and it's all his fault ).

anyhoo, any suggestions on restaurants in the mobile area that have some vegetarian items on the menu? is it going to be a problem like visiting new orleans? do local grocery stores have organic items in stock, or is that going to be a problem too? cost isn't much of an issue since it's only a few days, and we'd really like to eat something during our stay . thanks!

Looks like everyone's out tonight...Mobile is a good-sized city with plenty of variety for everybody, so it's not like you're going to a desert and starve!
You might want to post on the al.com forum to get a quicker response. al.com: Mobile Forum. Good luck - I'm sure you'll be fine!

LisaCACO - are you saying that you had a problem finding vegetarian food in New Orleans?

The Fresh Market on Airport Blvd should have organic items in stock. I've also seen vegetable items on many menus here, but I couldn't tell you if they were true vegetarian dishes because I always go for seafood.

If you have Google Earth loaded on your computer, try turning on the dining layer and click on a few resaurant symbols to see some website links. I go to them to check out the menus to see if there's anything I really want there. It beats randomly going to restaurants and being disappointed.

Problem in many southern restaurants is not necessarily the dish but the seasoningst. Green beans/cooked with ham, etc. Oh wait, that is what I am cooking now..

Seafood is the main draw in Mobile and NO..

Good Luck

yeah, it's the seasoning. as my dad says, "how can it taste good without the pig?"

all the southern sea towns have just this focus on seafood and pork, the double whammy for veggies.

Like Emeril says, "Pork Fat Rules".

I don't remember any vegetarian food from my time in NOLA, but it's been a few years - didn't know if it had changed.

I'm guessing you could get a salad in Mobile, but no guarantee that the cook preparing it didn't wash his hands with bacon.

we'll travel prepared then, with organic pb and j and and a few other things. with luck, we should make it a few days. in the meantime, we'll search a few veggie sites and hope some other poor veggies tried to survive there as well and have some suggestions.

thanks again!
