Lots of stores closing (BUT NOT SEARS OF COURSE) at Bel Air mall and nothing taking their place. Seriously, the Books-a-million spot has been vacant for over a year now. Any inside info on what's going to happen, what's going to join the mall, and when will they start making announcements and begin to work on things?

Many regional malls around the country have a noticeable number of vacancies, because there have been several high profile corporate implosions this quarter (Radio Shack, Wet Seal, Body Central, Cache). It's going to take a while for leasing teams to market the vacant spaces to prospective national retailers.

Well I hope this high rent boots out Sears and the lousy shabby sporty stores in the mall and brings in high end retail and dining.

Wow that is crazy !! I have never seen Bel-Air that empty and usually when a store closes another one is announced to take its spot in like 3 weeks.

Yea I havent seen a mall that empty since Shannon Mall in Union City, GA closed down a couple years back. I wouldnt be surprised if another Mall management company is looking for away to get the mall in their hands. I wonder if General Growth Properties ever managed Bel-Air

It just changed hands recently, so I doubt that's the case. I believe it's primarily just turnover due to the new management.

Actually, both regional malls in South Alabama (Bel Air Mall and Eastern Shore Centre) have recently been featured in the news regarding their amount of vacancies. In the case of Bel Air, the vacancies really aren't that alarming as they've been largely part of store closures on a nationwide scale. On the other hand, Eastern Shore Centre has been plagued by substantial vacancies since it first opened over a decade ago.

Eastern Shore Centre feels more like a power center, and Bel Air is super-regional. Having been to a lot of malls, Bel Air just looks to normal, maybe old. They need to renovate but I really just think they need a second floor. It adds to the look. I went to Long Beach center in 2013 and they have a 2nd floor and just built a bowling alley. It looks nice on the inside also.

They just need to update it and get better tenants.
