I actually live in Atmore, which is 50 miles northeast of Mobile. I lived in Mobile for a few years, but I had to move back to Atmore for family reasons. I still get to Mobile at least once a month though for shopping and I really did enjoy living there.

My wife & I no longer live in Mobile (moved last summer) and were never quite accepted by many of the local townspeople, seeing as how I am a 'damned' Yankee (and yes, I now know the difference), but I do hope that the recent ventures in industry revitalize the downtown area and the area as a whole. It was always so sad to see that whole stretch of Dauphin St., from the church west, that really needs some fixing up. Never mind much of the historic areas that have fallen into disrepair. I wish nothing but the best for our former home.

A previous poster mentioned the Airport/Azalea area - what a bloody mess! I taught at USA, and between that area and the Schillinger googooplex, it was mind-blowing. We did get to the beach and the Eastern Shore as much as possible, and that was very enjoyable.

. A "Damned" Yankee is one that moves here and ever leaves. For example I give my wife of 12 years from Minnesota. Still here. The snow birds love her down at the golf course on the Island.

I imagine you probably lived in West Mobile when you were here. I once lived out there and my life really changed when I moved into Midtown. I really regret living out there now; I missed out on a lot of things.

I know plenty of people, Yankee and otherwise, who are accepted in Mobile. A lot of it boils down to where do you live. It really matters here. Yes, it's stupid but that's the way it is. If one plans to live in West Mobile or some random subdivision on the Eastern Shore, you will be out of the loop. Because they aren't running into you very often is one reason. Out of sight, out of mind.

Certain streets or areas are famous and in demand for nothing but who lives on them. Visually, you can't tell that much but the house prices are nuts compared to the street right next door. And that's how you know.

My extended family's(not from Mobile) idea of success is a giant McMansion. A Mobilian's idea of success is: living on the Country Club of Mobile's golf course, Bayfront, on the "Rivah", certain neighborhoods in Spring Hill or certain streets in Midtown. The house itself might be a dump.

Mobile Bay Monthly, a local magazine, had a contest to pick the ideal first home of a Mobile newlywed. There were four choices: 2 McMansions in West Mobile, 1 modest ranch house in Spring Hill, and an historic bungalow on North Reed Street. Guess what won: the North Reed Street house in Midtown! I'm sure those West Mobile homes never had a chance!

Kadedam,

Lived in Mobile for 27 years ... up until 2 months ago.

Airport area is ok. That is "West Mobile". Schillenger rd is growing out there. However, it is not actually in the city, and you will have to drive 20-25 minutes to get to Midtown, Springhill, Azalea, Bel air Mall area, or any other parts of town that are in the mainstream Mobile area. It will take you 30-35 minutes to get downtown.

Alot of people like Midtown, but not me. My favorite area of town by far to live was in the Azalea/Airport Blvd area (mainly thinking of Downtowner blvd and Montlimar rd to be specific). It's nice and is in the center of everything (and 5-10 minutes from all other surrounding main Mobile areas). I lived in Lafayette Square Apts and Pine Bend/The Hamptons Apts and would recommend both, but mainly the later.

That was voted on in September. I would not call it an uproar. You hardly ever hear anyone mention it.
