My exchange student from Germany and I will be boarding a Carnival Cruise ship in Mobile March 10. I am planning to travel to Mobile from Hernando, MS on the 9th and spend the night there. I would appreciate a recommendation for a good hotel near the port , and a suggestion as to what we might do on the 9th that a 17 year old boy (and this old fart) might find interesting and entertaining.

Restaurant recommendations are welcome too....he doesn't eat anything that comes out of the water (though I love any seafood).

Thanks for your help.

A great restaurant is FELIX'S on the causeway next to the battleship ALABAMA, which is a fantastic piece of history to visit. Your student may or may not like the battleship.

For hotels downtown near the Cruise Terminal you could go with: (I'm getting the rates from orbitz.com, btw)

(Cheap)
Ramada Inn Downtown at 132/night
Radisson Admiral Semmes at 116/night
Holiday Inn Downtown/Historic District 153/night

(Nice)
Renaissance Riverview Plaza 189/night
The Battle House, A Renaissance Hotel 199/night

There are several others around downtown, but these know about the cruises generally and can help you out.

For an entertaining and educational outing, you should definitely go to the the exhibit on the human body at the Gulf Coast Exploreum (a museum). I've gone and it was really great. The museum includes an IMAX Theatre and there might be some cool showings.

Edit: Forgot to mention: This is downtown right across the street from the Renaissance Riverview on Water and Government Streets.

Agree that the Radisson Admiral Semmes is very close and is a small nice Hotel.

Wintzels Oyster House on Daulphin Street (close too) is a Mobile Tradition. They also have food besides seafood. Welcome to Wintzell's Oyster House

One of my favorites is the Brew Pub Hurricane Brewing

Many Places to eat on the causeway, just head through the tunnel and you drive by many.

I also second the Explorium and The Battle Ship. There is also a Mardi Gras Museum down town.

Hope you enjoy your stay in out city!

I was going to go to the Human Body exhibit, but I was scared I might get sick.

While they are human bodies, I didn't think too much about it. It was amazing nevertheless.

Go to The Bluegill, on the CAUSEWAY in the middle of the bay to get a fine local seafood meal....celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Daughter and her husband went to see it when it was in Atlanta. She was the same way, but said it wasn't gross at all...she highly recommended it and said it was fascinating.

I have been looking for a cruise and my favorite cruise departure port is Mobile. Is there any hope that a cruise company will resume cruises out of Mobile?
