Yay for Mobile!! As for becoming "just like Atlanta"--you mean Mobile will find a way to suck up the water from, like, three states?

The Target comment wasn't a dig - look at the HSV threads - I'm excited that we're getting a third one. I just want you to note that HSV, in anticipation of estimated 9,000 BRAC jobs, has probably overbuilt housing and retail (some builders may go bankrupt), but is way behind on infrastructure (roads / police / water / sewer / etc).

Also note that I may even be one of the people moving down there

BTW, I like Austal - and I've toured (for work) almost every shipyard in the US.

Mobile, Birmingham, and Huntsville are all on the make. When his term is over, the people of Alabama should erect a statue of Bob Riley.

Go Mobile GO....from a Birminghamian...I am thrilled to see our Port City BOOM. This makes Alabama more diversified, with greater tax base and stronger.

For decades, Mobile County brought Alabama's unemployment figures up, lagging the state's metros badly. Now the shoe is on the other foot.

All four of our metro areas are doing very well in different sectors: Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville and Montgomery.

And the second tier of Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden, Auburn, Dothan etc are doing well also,

Mobile has a superb deep water port and an abundance of natural and industrial resources.

It certainly bodes well for Alabama that the two "A"'s are booming....

Aerospace and Automotive....

Winners

(The Navy picks Mobile as commissioning city city for warship)

The U.S. Navy has selected Mobile as the city where its littoral combat ship Independence will be commissioned, or put into service, according to the Mobile Council of the Navy League of the United States.
A press event is planned Monday for Mayor Sam Jones to formally announce the honor and share details about its significance.
Mobile beat out two other cities as commissioning sites, said Richard Pennington, local president of the Navy League.
Jones said the commissioning promises to build on the economic impact already felt by Mobile thanks to the ship, now about 65 percent complete at Austal USA on the Mobile River. This event will not only draw countless people into the city, but it will also highlight one of Mobile's major corporate partners, Austal," Jones said.
Pennington said details about when the commissioning will take place will be shared at the Monday event. The commissioning promises to draw crew members and their families, plus veterans who will schedule reunions around the event.
Pennington explained that the Independence will hit a series of milestones prior to its commissioning-- such as launch, sea trials and christening.
The launch has been moved from mid-February to April 26 to allow for the vessel's completion.
People who attend the Monday event will be able to see the Independence in its shed at Austal from the windows of the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center, Pennington said, and chat with experts about its unique capabilities.
Members of an LCS commissioning committee, chaired by former Mayor Mike Dow, will also be introduced, Pennington said.
Austal is building the ship as part of a team led by Virginia-based General Dynamics Corp. The first-of-its kind, shore-hugging warship is an aluminum-hulled, trimaran design.
A competing team led by Maryland-based Lockheed Martin Corp. is building a steel, monohulled prototype.
Despite cost overruns on both vessels, the military has said it ultimately wants 55 of the small, high-speed ships. A Navy budget released early last month showed the Navy now plans to award a third LCS contract this summer, with two more buys next year.

cut/p9/cWhat: Press conference to announce commissioning of naval warship Independence, being built at Austal USA
Where: Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center, concourse level
When: 11 a.m., Monday, March 3
Who: Political, community and business leaders, Austal and naval officials

The US Navy is trying to replace 30 FF-7 Oliver Hazard Perry Class “frigates,” 14 MCM Avenger Class mine countermeasures vessels, and 12 MHC-51 Osprey Class coastal mine hunters (TL = 56), with about 55 Littoral Combat Ships.

the Navy’s FY 2006 budget for the LCS program was $1.054 billion ($470.3M procurement, $584.1M RDT&E), which dropped to $926.6 million in FY 2007 budget ($597.2M procurement of ships & mission modules, $329.4M RDT&E). The FY 2008 request is set at $1.208 billion ($990.8M for 3 ships + 2 mission modules, $217.5M RDT&E); but the Navy’s revised LCS procurement strategy is shifting that allocation, even in the unlikely event that all funding survives.

Congressional votes, which are becoming less supportive of the LCS program as its costs rise, could trim that number further.
