Just take a drive around the eastern shore through Daphne and Fairhope in spring and I think you will choose that area over Mobile. The city is nice but the eastern shore is one of the most picturesque places along the Gulf of Mexico.

I just spoke to someone who's moving down here to work at Thyssen Krupp. He has done the drive to the plant from Daphne and Spanish Fort, and it takes him 35 minutes, as he goes in early in the morning. Houses are very reasonable in these areas now, and no matter what some people say, crime is at a minimum. They are having problems in Mobile's swanky subdivisions(Heron Lakes), with break in in the daytime...and downtown Mobile is not as safe specially at night..period. The Eastern Shore is beautiful and quite safe, and it is a very viable option for anyone working in Mobile.

Crime happens in every city no matter where you go of course Mobile will have more crime than the eastern shore the city it self has more people than Baldwin County has. as a whole. Mobile was ranked in 2008 as the safest city in Alabama yes (Huntsville) did not make the list.Crime happens every second all over the world.Any one who wants to live in Mobile by all means go for ! Mobile is not a 3rd world country, the eastern shore is nice don`t get me wrong but Mobile is nice as well. I have visited many places Mobile is not as bad as you are making it out to be trust me.As for downtown being dangerous I can`t remember when was the last time I heard any of murders or muggings in downtoe Mobile on the local news stations.I have heard of people leaving the bars downtown(Dauphin street only at night) drunk and puking on the ground. Then again that is like saying that will be abnormal for Buorbon street in New Orleans. Crime in Mobile only happens in isolated areas such as the Toulmanville community, or Mayesville Community.Evry time I go down town I see a heavy police presence down there be it on bikes, little motorized scooters,on foot , or squad cars !

Unfortunately Prichard also gets lumped in with Mobile, not in official stats, but just the reputation.

lol, I apologize for the typo mistakes I was trying to express my opinion before my class start !!
Southernaturelover : Oh yeah Prichard does put Mobile in a negative spotlight as far as by ear(hearing about it), but statisticaly Prichard is a seperate city with it`s own goverment so as far as crime rate goes they are on their own.

Both areas ( baldwin co. and mobile) have there good and bad sides, but in general a person should be able to find an area to suite there needs and wants. Either side of the bay you choose, it's nice to know yo have all the perks of a major city, beautiful farmland and great beaches all within a 50 mile radius, and it's all in one of the countrys lower tax states, basically something fo everyone.

That is very true we are blessed to have all that in such a small radius.

From someone living in Fairhope, AL
From someone who lives in Fairhope and has grown up in Mobile (downtown and west); if you are retired you are going to love Fairhope. Over half our Fairhope population is retirees. If you live in Fairhope, you could leave your door unlocked all day with no problems. If you live in downtown Mobile, you better lock your door... Downtown is beautiful with the oak trees on Government Blvd and the old homes. Some of the neighboorhoods really watch out for each other (because they have too). But decide for yourself, visit and then compare the crime rates on the two cities. Fairhope has a quaintness all its own with old homes, flower lined streets, walks on the beaches.
Just remember Mobile or Fairhope is only a short drive away from each other.
