Hi everyone! My husband and I have been in central East AL now for almost 5 years and have looked at tons of places to move. I think we have finally landed on trying to get down to coastal AL. We have a 5 year old son that is home schooled so schools are not really of great concern but jobs are. He is a social worker and I am a nurse. I have a few questions about the area.
Our son suffers from really really bad seasonal allergies and where we are right now it is almost unbearable. I am not sure what exactly he is allergic to but am wondering if the general seasonal allergies are bad down there?
The hospitals where we are right now do not have a good reputation and the pay is really just offensive. Are there decent hospitals down there? And what is the average pay and shift differential for an RN?
Are there many positions for social workers?
What areas should we definitely stay away from? We would be looking for a 3BR/2BA house with a small piece of land and budget would be 150k or below. I know that prices us out of areas like Fairhope and such and we are ok with that. We like the beach and rural would be ok. I have been looking at Foley and saw a few houses in Semmes. What is it like there?

Thank you all for any information you can give. I really appreciate it!

Be sure and price homeowners insurance. Close to the water, it can be pricey.

You should definitely be able to find a place in Mobile County for that price. Plus you would be closer to the employment centers. Mother in law is a nurse and has worked at mobile infirmary for years and loved it.

Your son's seasonal allergies really won't be any better in Mobile.

You need to be directly on the coast to help your allergies. I have them bad too and I lived in Florida and it relieved it. However, go too far back inland and they come back with a vengeance. Of course, property is more expensive directly on the coast too.

If you can't do that, I would not move strictly for allergies. I was moving for a job and the lack of allergies was a pleasant surprise.

Mississippi is right, the closer to the salt air the better the alergies. You might want to check out Fairhope because they have a hospital there. I am a man and homeschool our four kids, Baldwin County has the B.E.A.C.H. Homeschool group which is pretty nice.
