Although some would recommend the midtown area of downtown Mobile, I personally don't care for it due to it's historical/ghetto feel. I would recommend the Saraland area. It's a straight shot to downtown Mobile in about 15 to 20 minutes at the most.
By the way, I lived in Mobile for 40 years and just recently made a move out of that place due to the "ghetto feel".

Midtown can be ghetto. It can also be nice. Just one of those "historical" areas. It seems they are all that way, no matter what city.

I love, I mean LOVE, Midtown. Yes, it can be ghetto but eventually all those areas will be bought up. It's been being gentrified for 30 years so far and now even places I was somewhat afraid of are being cleaned up. It's really exciting. It's a great opportunity to live where you can actually walk to restaurants for not that much money like other cities.
If you are an exec. or pretty high up at Austal or Airbus, your peers tend to live in Oakleigh Garden District area( this is close to downtown- can be too urban for some). I know at least 2 from Austal. Lawyers, a few doctors, and many, many pharm. reps. Or Beverly Court, North Reed St., S. Monterey, Monterey Place, Macy Place, Flo Claire area, Ashland Place but it's pretty pricy now. Or Spring Hill area, but house choice generally runs to dated ranches to beautiful and very expensive. From what I've heard, the Thyssen-Krupp people were moving to West Mobile.
Generally, though, homes along Dauphin Street and the surrounding area between Florida and Ann Streets are great, no worries really.
Has anyone been down Broad Street lately? Wow! They planted the median with crepe myrtles, so pretty.
Another easy place for you would be Spanish Fort or Daphne area because it's close to the Bayway.
Good luck!

Typically, in any city across the US, "historical" streets/neighborhoods are somewhat close in proximity to what some would consider "ghetto" streets/neighborhoods. I think most would consider "historical" to be synonymous with older yet nice, carrying much cultural and much history. "Ghetto" would would just be older, and not in as nice of condition. Although it would carry just as much "history" in the true sense of history, in my opinion.

Just like any other major or moderate size city such as Mobile you can have a very nice cultural and historical neighborhood and a few blocks down it could be ghetto. fortunantly for Mobile several of those ghetto areas are being converted into the Oaklegh district now. There are historical or non historical areas of mid town that are not near any ghettos such as the Dauphin street district or areas near and around Murphy high !
The median is nice on Broad street they will soon be planting more on the north of Broad as well.

Thank you. I'm not a great fan of the term ghetto as it too vague and broad. Ghetto= Poor? Correct?
Again thanks for you response, great thread you all have going on here.

Yes, poorer and higher crime areas ... at least that's what I would nail "ghetto" down to mean, and what it would mean in this thread. Of course, the word has been morphed into many different forms - especially when used as an adjective.

Well said and true...
The original poster (OP) may want to check out the Oakleigh Venture Revolving Fund's website for projects they are working on.
Oakleigh Venture Revolving Fund
There is a great page on "Life in Oakleigh" on there that's worth a read.
Certainly, we shouldn't put up with crime and we don't; we have a great connection with Precinct 1 and they do a great job with patrolling.
I've run into many people, typically blue collar workers like my painters or carpenters, who think I'm nuts for moving down here. Which I think is pretty funny, considering they live in a trailer park with several meth labs!
Right around the bend in the road from any of the places people recommend: Saraland, Semmes, West Mobile(sometimes right next door is a meth lab- successful drug dealer must live somewhere, you know! And it's usually not in the 'hood because a sign of their success is to move to the suburbs.), Irvington, etc. - You might be by something "ghetto-ish" but in the white trash kind of way! That's supposed to be BETTER?!?! And don't be thinking the Eastern Shore is that safe either....drive to the south of Fairhope!
This makes me laugh.... i remember the story about the Maysville Soldiers- these stupid brothers from the Maysville area(Michigan Avenue but right by i-10 area) who got this insurance $$ from being burned and used it to start a drug business. They bought a hummer and drove around Maysville terrorizing people... guess where they lived? over in Wynnfield, a tony subdivision off Cody Road in West Mobile! LOL!!!
I feel much safer here with the amount of police protection you get through Mobile.... if I was out on my McMansion estate, I'm not that protected.
Fortunately, there are a lot of well-connected people who want to live down here in Midtown, particularly Oakleigh Garden District, like the former Mayor of Mobile, Mike Dow( who made millions with his brother-in-law's company), the former ambassador to Jamaica, several judges, and the editor of the Mobile Press-Register, just to name a few. Every year, I see former "ghetto" areas change ; it's amazing! And my property taxes keep increasing! And my house value continues to go up A LOT every year. Houses sell in 1 week or less on my street unless they are the bigger houses.
