School starts in August and ends in May. Different schools have various dates.

Since you said you like "in the country-type areas", these would be options:
Of course, because it 's county land, there aren't the protections you get in cities. A spare parts store or a bar could be right next to you.
If I went country, I would pick Eastern shore over Mobile and try not to get too far from I-10 or the bay.
Eastern shore areas to the north and south of I-10- beautiful acreage to the north of Loxley, Spanish Fort. The key is to stay close to I-10 so the commute won't be too bad. Schools are known to be good.
West Mobile country areas : there are plenty of nice areas but you have to go check it out. the Dawes Road area, places south of Cottage Hill Road. The Semmes area has some beautiful land as well. Land around Eliza Jordan Rd. and Tanner Williams Road/Howells Ferry Rd past Snow Road has some nice spots. Grand Bay-Wilmer Road has nice property out there as well.
I like the areas south of Airport Blvd better than the areas north of Airport or south of I-10, although there are pockets of very nice areas in there. I would also love to live on Dog River or Fowl River, but honestly, there are a lot of junky houses stuck in there with the few good.
Schools in West County of Mobile are usually good-----good idea to check scores first though because just because a school is out of the city- doesn't mean it's good. You can also do the magnet schools, which are excellent, but that requires registering for the lottery in Jan./Feb. & not everyone gets in.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Good Location, upcoming new subdivisions and apartments. 20 minutes to Mobile...Loxley... It would fit fine in your price range. I-10 to Mobile or Pensacola..AL 59 to Gulf Shores in 30 minutes.

I wonder about what are the names of the schools in Loxley's area? I know several people who I guess technically live in Loxley because they live in Steelwood subdivision. They all drive to UMS-Wright or some other Mobile private school; or Bayside Academy in Daphne.

Can you get to Mobile from Loxely in 20 mins during rush hour? I know it takes longer than 30 minutes from I65 to Gulf Shores on 59 especially during the summer. It takes me 25 minutes to get to Summerdale from I65 normally because you have to slow down to go through Loxely and Roberstdale plus the lights on 59. Of course, I am not going on the expressway..

Well, we timed it during the summer from Steelwood's entrance ( just north of the Loxley exit), it only took 15 minutes to get into downtown Mobile, actually Midtown at Ann Street & Government Street. We were going 80 mph, though. My husband was interested in moving over there(Steelwood- it's a golf community), but I don't like interstate driving or any commute over 10 minutes anymore. But I timed it to make him happy, but I still said, "Are you crazy!?" ( As you all know- I'm a huge fan of the convenience and beauty of Midtown.)
For the original poster, I'm talking about living around Loxley close to I-10, not driving down 59 as little as possible. There seemed to be a lot of pretty country properties just north of Loxley up 59. Just make sure you check the school scores and all that..... I don't know what the schools are for that area.

look east of Montrose and Fairhope in Barnwell or Sherwood, North to Malbis. Check out mapquest. Land in L.A. (Lower Alabama) is getting high. Also think about Bay Minette land not quite as high as South of I-10 1hr or so to beach. Time to get sand between toes is better than from Northeast Al.
