If you are any kind of progressive person at all, you will probably not be happy in Tillman's Corner. The same can be said for Theodore, Grand Bay, Semmes, Citronelle, Wilmer, etc. These areas tend to be very bible belt and backward, as well as generally trashy and low on the socioeconomic scale. The best place by far is Midtown, with easy access to the entertainment district and art venues. Also the schools are great, with several magnet schools in the area.

Can't speak for others, but sometimes yes
Of course, I can go both ways in regards to progressivism/conservatism.

I am from Virginia and moved here to Mobile County until after the New Year. I am staying with my daughter in the middle of a cotton field. Well, at least that's how it feels. I am accustomed to city life so it has been a huge adjustment for me. I was surprised to read how people from Mobile feel about Tillmans Corner Wal Mart or any part of the county. All I really see (jmo and I don't get out much, lol) are lower income working class people. I would not ever call them trash or mutants. In fact, being who I am I would never call anyone that. As far as the crime rate I think it's as high in other parts of the city and county as well. I will have to agree with wanting to get out of the deep south for other reasons though.

There are several areas in TC that offer nice places to live. You just need to choose wisely. I tell anyone looking for a palce to live, to drive by on a friday or saturday night in the area they are considering and this will let them know if they want to buy here.
And for the comments about the rednecks~ there are rednecks everywhere, and most of them would give you the shirt off their backs (if you wanted or needed it.).

I do see the bible belt and backward that you are talking about. Also, the lower economics...however I am just opposed to the word trashy. Not that I have not used it enough when I was "growing" up. I just see it as judgmental and nasty now. Not to mention some great artists, musicians and thinkers have come from such backgrounds...give people a break. You never know what diamond you are passing up. Besides, progressive people see potential in every situation...not just their comfort zone. vicky
