Yeah, and who can blame them in this gawd awful humidity and heat in the deep south. Reason enough to look for a home in...another state. I mean besides the small minded biased attitudes of course....

The heat's not that bad lol. Besides, adequate dressing is the key.

Just stay out of Tillman's Corner. It's what everyone else said. If you must live here, West Mobile or the Eastern Shore. I live in the Grelot/Hillcrest area and I'm buying a house over on the Eastern Shore. I used to think there wasn't enough "stuff" to do over there and that it would be boring...until I ran out of things to look at over here and expanded my search. Wow...just spend some time over there. Go to their Walmart, Target, etc. It's a totally different environment. I've lived in Mobile my whole life, and it's definitely better over there. Mobile used to be a really nice city, but it has gone down drastically starting in the late 80s.
I can say this because I travel the US for work, so I've been all over the country. There are places much better and places much worse. I was one of those that thought Mobile was the trash pit of the nation....until I went to some other places. Now I've decided to just stay around the Gulf Coast near family and the beach. There are nice places away from the "trashy" people. You just keep having to play the moving game over the years. Daphne used to be nothing, now it has exploded and is still growing because people have expanded out.
Honestly, you want to know what the pros of living here are?......if you love the beach, if you love to be able to make an average income but buy a NICE house in a NICE neighborhood, 3 airports within the region, the casinos not far away, etc. Mostly it's the cost of living. Who wants to live in a large, fun, city but has to live in a cardboard box because their $85k a year salary will only buy you that? Live here, live nicer, save your $ and take monthly trips to the "cool" city of your choice. Do the math. I'd looked at moving to Chicago, Nashville, Suburban Detroit, etc. It's just too cheap to live here. Of course, I don't have or want kids....so the schools aren't an issue. If you do have kids, private schools are the way to go unless you live in Baldwin County. Also, I'd looked at moving to Gulf Breeze, FL. It's alot cheaper to live here and drive the 1 hour to the beach.

To be honest I'd take the Mobile area over Nashville and Detroit (even suburban) any day. Now Chicago? I would live there in a heartbeat (at least north side). But like you said, cardboard box. Plus, the winter is insane. If you take in the whole region, Mobile is easiest one of the best values in the country. It's not big city, but it's not too small either.

Yeah, I absolutely love Chicago and try to go each year around Christmas. I've been there close to a dozen times. It's a very clean city for its size and the western and northern suburbs are really nice. As much as I like the city, I like my independence and driving my car, so I'd live out in the burbs in Naperville/Aurora/Batavia or somewhere similar. It's insanely expensive to have a car in the city. Living out there would mean very expensive housing/taxes, long commutes, etc. It'd cost a LOT to have a nice comfortable life there.....probably would cost me a stressful job with long hours and long commutes, which I'm not up for having.

I dont live there but reading the paper it gives you the impression you will need to shoot your way in and out of that area. If that is what you are used to you will be fine. It seems there is a high concentration of meth labs and such. Friends have also reported being solicited for prostitution and such when in that area.

Not really. I mean yeah, I don't doubt meth and prostitution exist in Tillman's corner. But I never felt unsafe there. It's just a little redneck outskirt of Mobile.
