Default Looking for an online teaching job.

Hey!! Every body!!

I would like to introduce myself an enlist all of you in helping find what I want. Here is a little bit about myself

I am a former Media Specialist from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind who has decided to start a new chapter in her life. I taught storytelling, Information Literacy and career research classes for the visually impaired students. I was also responsible for the after school programs that offered the services until 8:30 PM, as well as overseeing the assistive technology lab for the visually impaired. I would like to share this knowledge, experience, and servicewith other professionals in the field of serving the disabled

The oldest of three children I was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1950. Cerebral Palsy affected my speech and coordination and caused my inability to walk until the age of two. At the age of two my family moved to St. Mary’s, Georgia due to my father's change in employment. My mother was able to find physical and speech therapy for me at the nearby facility in Jacksonville. Florida.

I attended Kindergarten through the first half of the seventh grade at St. Marys Elementary School. In December, 1962 my family moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina where she attended the Spartanburg County public schools and graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1968, the largest high school in the state at the time with a B average. I then attended Winthrop College (University) where I graduated in May, 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Library Science

I began my career at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind School as the Librarian of the School for the Blind. I received my Masters of Education in Special Education with an emphasis on the visually impaired in 1978 and I am a certified Media Specialist and Teacher of the Visually Impaired. I retired from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind as Media Specialist and Teacher of the Visually Impaired in May, 2003.

I began the latest chapter in my life as me and my husband, Jimmy, moved to the family farm in Bradley, Alabama in 2003. My father, Harold Palmer, raises horses on the farm; I have done contractual work for such companies as the Descriptive and Captioned Media Program (DCMP). I ride horses and motorcycles. I have attended conferences as a representative for DCMP. and am very active in my church. I am a volunteer fire-woman, and work in my own business.

My business, Discovering Disabilities Data, provides information on different disability issues. Services provided include online research locating basic and statistical information on different disabilities. This includes identifying and recommending service providers, assistive technology, educational and training procedure, grant information, and the law (including the American with Disabilities Act). Discovering Disabilities Data also provides such services as document retrieval, telephone research, peaking on library services for the disabled, and workshops concerning disability issues. I can also be a disabilities consultant for education for the disabled such as lesson plans construction and curriculum development.
I would like to continue in the field of Special Education providing services and teaching online. I am one of a few Media Specialists who can both read and write Braille and knows American Sign Language.
I may be retired from one career but I want to still be involved in education. My ideal assignment would be something I could do online from my home. I still retain my South Carolina teacher's certification as a Media Specialist and a Teacher of the Visually Impaired.

If any of you are connected in the field of education I would love to get to know you. Maybe you would have some other ideas for me.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Wanda

Try Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, AL: Columbia Southern University - Online University for Distance Learning .

This Online College has several ties to some very well established 4 year institutions.

Was quite impressed with your accomplishments, wanda, despite your challenging limitations.
I am retired from the Social Security Administration and share many of the areas discussed, especially those of disabilities-physical, mental and visual,as I was an SSA disability exam-
iner for more than 13 years. I trained others nationally to do the job bearing that job description as well. I grew up in the Montgomery area and finally relocated to the south after being away for forty years. My home is now in beautiful Dothan, 16 miles from the Florida line and still find myself active as an advocate for those with challenges you outlined in your post. Never thought much about online services that could be offered in that regard. I would love to share ideas as to what use could be made further of my education (media specialist as well), training and work experience.

If that weren't enough, I am status-post strokes (2 surgeries) x 5 and still manage to teach on a substitute basis in the Dothan City School system and act as a consultant to my wife in her tax business. The strokes' main manifestation is that of a quite severe but functional visual impairment. I am writing my memoirs and memories of growing up-life in the south (Beatrice included) during the 1950s,60s and early 70s.

Any thoughts?

Smile Would love to share some ideas on providing information for and about

I would love to share some of my thoughrs about some things that may could be offered to different agencies and individuals in the areas of information for and about people with disabilities. As I mentioned in my first post I have the dream of starting my own business. You would be and excellent person to be involved with your background in Social Security and different areas of disabilities. I have written a business plan. I would love to share the type of services I would like to offer with you. As I mention one of my other dreams is to teach onlline and I am not giving up on that. I am also hoping to write a story of my life and how it was growing up in the 50's,60's and 70's with a disability. If you are interested in sharing some thing let me know and we will exchange personal email adresses.

Have a good day.

Wanda
