Bulldawgfan,
Around here it seems that Bama, Auburn and LSU are kings...but some of us are Bulldog fans, so come on down. I am glad you enjoyed your stay here in Paradise. It really is a very laid back and friendly place, and yes, police are very visible....and they keep people in check. (Fairhope police I understand, are the highest paid in the state.) So it's a great place one can walk around, even at night, without fear of being mugged.
We just had mayoral elections, and Willie Bean the dog, did not win.RATS!!! But he is running for president. Ck out Willie Bean for Mayor website. I think Tress(his manager/owner) still as the site up. He is based out of the Coffee Loft, a great hangout for people of all ages, and backgrounds.
Houses are starting to move a bit more than a few months ago, and most buyers are people from out of town. We had an excess of inventory and hopefully they will be soon all sold, for the sake of the builders, and the people trying to sell.

humacaena,

Yea, I heard about the mayoral race from my old downstairs neighbor. A protest than nearly backfired!! There was plenty that I liked about Fairhope, but I did not want to sound like a member of the chamber!! From the lighting of the trees to the arts and crafts week ends to the small mardi gras parades... not alot of negative to mention during my year long stay there. Given the final location I really did not understand the "No to Wal Mart" stuff... it sure beats going to Daphne... which I guess would be my one and only complaint. Really only one way in and one way out. And that ain't much of a complaint... I have worked in the Florida Keys before, and that is really the definition of 'one way in, one way out'.
I could very easily see my self living on the eastern shore in the future.

Bulldawgfan,
Thank God the "No Wal Mart" folks lost that battle, and we are enjoying a very large and beautiful Wal Mart. The old timers are looking after the intown merchants, and I can't blame them, but Wal Mart has not really done any damage. We love it! And there is a Publix supermarket being built, which will make grocery shopping much more exciting.

My parents had a house in Lower Matecumbe Key, back in the 70's, and even though it is a lovely area, I much prefer the Eastern Shore. New Orleans is only 2 1/2 hours away, Birmingham 3 1/4, casinos in Biloxi 1 hour...so if one wants excitement and shows, it is an easy drive.

Thank you bulldawgfan and humanaeca for your posts/ Fairhope soounds lovely and quite frankly where I'm from I would never worry about walking around at night without getting mugged. It seems so sad to me that some people have to live that way.

Mobile sounds beautiful and I love large trees and historic homes but not at the cost of my peace of mind or safety.

P.S. Bulldawgfan, do you know how much the top floor of the house is Fairhope rented for just to give me some idea?

adventuregurl,

I am nor sure, but I think my office rented it for $1400/month, fully furnished (two bedroom) all utilities included. I think my downstairs neighbor said it is currently being rented unfurnished without utilities for $700/month. Here is a view from the back deck. That is Mobile bay. Just to the right (just out of sight) is the Fairhope pier.

Default Life in Fairhope

I have been in Fairhope for 2 years now. I moved from Orlando, what a diiference. Some businesses still are closed on Sunday, keeping with the old days. Any place you go people will talk to you. They pay no mind if you don't live here. Someone will always go out of their way to help. They have the best downtown .You can park and walk all over the place. Fairhope has a beautiful library downtown. What I like the best is the traffic isn't that bad. If I decide to go out somewhere about 2:00 pm it is not a big hassle. We don't have alot of the chain businesses, we are more into mom and pop stores succeeding. This place is more relaxing and less stressful they where I came from.

You must be in heaven.. I know I am having moved to N. AL from Tampa. I use to dread going out anywhere after 4 pm due to the traffic. Fairhope was on my list of places to live until my daughter moved to N. AL. I have such fond memories of Fairhope having spent a lot of time there growing up.
