Another city that compares to these (except for Orlando) would be Montgomery, Alabama. About the same size as Baton Rouge or Columbia or Tallahassee and it's also a state capital. But unlike Columbia or Baton Rouge, it's not a college town and faces the same issues and sort of the same demographics (racially divided areas, high number of government employees, hot humid weather in summer but mild winters).

The Baton Rouge metro (about 850K) is over twice the size of the Montgomery metro (375K) - not far short of Birmingham. The Columbia metro is about the same size as the Baton Rouge metro.

What does Birmingham has to do with this. Can people stop using Birmingham as a reference point when it has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

I think that Mobile should be compared more towards New Orleans rather than Baton Rouge as Mobile is essentially mini NOLA. I personally believe that won't be case for long as the economic outlook of NOLA and LA in general don't look too good as their economy is not as diverse as Alabama. I have a hankering that Mobile is about go through major urbanization if they continue on the course they have been for the past couple of areas. When (not if) Baldwin County finally assimilates into the Mobile metro, the 3 county metro would already be bigger in area than NOLA but would still be half the population. However the houses being sold right now in both counties (Mobile and Baldwin county) outnumber the metros of baton rouge and NOLA combined. I follow NOLA economic projects pretty closing as I think its actually a pretty nice place but I'm definitely seeing more projects unfold in Mobile than the NOLA metro

Baldwin County has been teetering on merging with the Mobile MSA again. Looks like Daphne-Fairhope-Foley MSA is going to be downgraded to a Micropolitan area again under the new standards..... if it isn't absorbed into the Mobile MSA.

I have a feeling that the next 10 years will be big for the Mobile Metro. I feel that we will finally gain Baldwin County and once the new reroute of Highway 98 (highway 158) is complete, more will start to commute from George County MS, to Saraland and Mobile as the commute time will be cut by 10-15mins, so I feel that we will absorb George County as urban expansion continues west along with the noticeable uptick in projects coming to Mobile. Which would bring a 4 county metro of like 5000 square miles

If you exclude Spanish Fort and Daphne, people in Baldwin County are just as likely to commute to Pensacola as they are to Mobile.

If you live in Foley or Gulf Shores, it's 10-15 miles closer to Pensacola than it is to Mobile.

I can see George County being added to the MSA.10 years ago Clark County (Al)was close to being added in the CSA.
